League News

The Swinburn Maddison Durham Sunday Football League returned to action Last Sunday after weeks of cancellations due to the weather.

Hetton Progress in all England
By Groundhopper.

Hetton Lyons Cricket Clubs All England FA Sunday Cup 3rd Round against Liverpool side Poulton Royal Finallly got played on Sunday, the game originally to be played in Liverpool was cancelled twice due to the weather then the tie was again cancelled as it was moved to Spennymoor the Home of the Lyons.A game that the Lyons have waited for seven weeks will be remembered for the result and not the game.  It took a long time for the game to get going and it was the final ball that was lacking for the Lyons, the visitors had very few chances in fact the Lyons keeper  not having to make a save in the first 45 mins as the Lyons defence gave nothing away. In the 17th minute Lewis Dodds put a great ball through for Chris bell to beat the offside trap and slipped the ball past the Poulton keeper to make it 1-0.Bell nearly doubled his tally just before half time after his shot beat the keeper but the Poulton defender cleared it of the line halt time 1-0.Second half got under way with once again the ball being more in midfield than anywhere else with Ainsley and Dodds in the thick of it. After the hour mark a triple substition for the Lyons, Cogdon  Graydon and Moore for  Ainsley  ,Lowther and Toft,Bradley Groves the Lyons manager changed it to a 5-3-2 formation and they upped  the pace of the game and in the 73rd minute in paid off, Graydon won the ball knocked it wide to Capper on the left wing who put it through to Cogdon, he turned the defender inside out and smacked the ball across the keeper who had no chance to make it 2-0 to the Lyons, the visitors would have make the long way back to Liverpool very disappointed that they were very poor on the day.
Hetton Team, Finch, Roulston Mason Dixon Capper, Bell  Dodd’s  Ainsley Toft, Byrne Lawther.

Subs Bishop Moore Graydon  Cogdon  Rae.

Hetton Now entertain Huddersfield Irish Centre in the 4th round of the Competition at Spennymoor next Sunday Kick Off 1-00pm

Extra Time needed for Kelloe wmc to progress
By Groundhopper
Kelloe WMC FC entertained Birtley Barley Mow wmc in the last 16 of the Durham Football Association Sunday county cup.  Both teams started well without creating many chances.  After the break with the pitch becoming heavier, Birtley started well again and took the lead through a penalty when Tom Orton brought down the Birtley striker inside the box.  As the game continued Birtley became tired and started to concede a lot of free kicks resulting in their centre half been sent off for a second bookable offence.  Then Kelloe equalised with a great finish from outside the box from Stuart Thompson.  The game ended 1 - 1 after 90 minutes and in extra time Kelloe dominated with the extra man and wasted numerous chances before Chris Smith dribbled inside the box and scored with a cool top corner strike with only 1 minute left.

In the  League’s Premier Division  Houghton Glendale entertained Burmoor Cricket Club ,due to the weather both clubs going 7 weeks without a game,1st half was always going to be a struggle for both sets of players who haven’t played for so long, lot of poor touches and sloppy play in 1st 20 mins of the game,Burnmoor were a goal down on 30 mins after some poor defending .In the second Half Burnmoor looked for the equalizer and this came on 55 min A well delivered cross from Andy hall was converted by lee Wright. A great finish with the right foot from close range. The Final score 1-1, Brandon Bay Horse travelled to Burnside wmc and both sides shared the points in a 4-4 draw.

In the First Division Lumley Fc travelled to Sacriston Wmc the 1st game of 2010 for both clubs was a game that was decided by a late goal. Lumley dominated possession but failed to create the cutting edge. A battling stalemate opened up late on and both keepers made saves to keep the scores at 0-0. With 4 minutes remaining Lumley stole the points with a fine finish from Ward. The Washington Arms moved into second place in Division One with a fine four nil victory over Birtley Board Inn. After a goalless first half in which both teams looked decidedly rusty after the long break caused by the recent bad weather the Arms take the lead with a fortunate goal, a miss hit cross falling kindly to Danny Murray who volleyed home from close range. The Board Inn press forward in search of an equaliser however a solid Arms defence well marshalled by David Lyall comfortably deal with any threats. In a ten minute spell the Arms put the result beyond doubt. Michael Stubbs heads home a great Danny Noble cross to make it two nil, two minutes later Danny Murray grabs his second latching on to a miss hit clearance from the keeper. The hard working Chris Morrison completes the scoring finishing off the move of the game with a well struck strike from the edge of the box.

In the Second Division Steelers FC started the New Year with a 6-0 away win at Pittington FC. Michael Nichol grabbed a hat trick and goals from Bowes, Malekpour and Dawson gave them a 6 goal victory. The game was played at a tremendous pace with both sides enjoying their first run out for 6 weeks. Special thanks must go to Dave Ryan the referee as he had a tremendous game officiating this match. Washington Lambton Village were 7-6 winners at Coxhoe wmc, Pelton FC travelled   to West Rainton FC and shared the points in a 4-4 draw.

In the third Division Bowburn Cooperage were 1-0 Home winners over Shadforth Plough Inn , East Rainton Travellers Rest were 3-2 winners at Washington Usworth Top Club and Washington Victoria were 3-1 home winners over Hamsteels Inn.

In the Fourth Division Witton Gilbert Wmc entertained Chester Leonard’s This was a good hard fought game with Witton continuing their good run with a 3-1 win against a much improved Chester Leonards.Ben Sanderson opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a free kick on the edge of the 18 yard area which found it’s way in at the far post. Barrie Allport made it 2-0 10 minutes later with a cool finish from 10 yards into the corner past the advancing keeper. That remained the score at half time. The second half was a different story with Leonard’s pressing hard and got a foothold in the game with a neat finish following a great through ball to make 2-1.With 15 minutes left though Witton got the killer goal when Ian Renwick was brought down in the area and got up to despatch the resultant penalty into the corner. With Leonard’s pushing forward there were opportunities for Witton to extend their lead with Paul Finnegan going close on 2 occasions and Barrie Allport blazing over from 10 yards with the goal at his mercy, somewhat dampening an otherwise very impressive individual display. A mention should also go to the referee Paul Burt who had an excellent game. Langley Park Rams Head were 4-0 winners at Durham Garden House; the Bird Inn won 2-1 at Quarrington Hill WMC.. Neville’s Cross Social crashed to a 4-2 defeat at Washington Colliery Fc

In the JD Taxis Trophy 1st round the big Chester le Street Derby saw  The Osborne host  Hilda Park the Osborne opened the scoring when Hilda Park Full back Ross Atkinson turning in an Osborne cross into his own goal past a stranded Hilda Park Keeper Tony Chapman. The Osborne showed encouraging signs in patches with good displays throughout and another man of the match performance by Chris Winn. Hilda Park had two sent off late into the game but the own goal was enough to see The Osborne through to the next round with a Fine 1-0 win. Sedgefield Black Lion had a very good 7-0 away win at Chester Plough Inn in the 3rd Round of the Deerness Driveways Trophy with goals from Phil Bland, Kajid Sanders, Phill Tonks and two each from Dan Newby and Ben Smith. In the Castle Insurance Trophy Chester Easystreet were 3-1 winners at Gilesgate Moor Hotel.
