Luck deserts the Irish writes Groundhopper...

In the National Football Association Sunday Cup Competition, Huddersfield Irish Centre Fc were the Visitors to Spennymoor Towns Ground on Sunday to Face to face 2006 and 2008 winners of the Competition Hetton Lyons Cricket Club. Both sides looking to progress into the Quarter Final of the Competition. The Lyons and the Irish Centre both fielded very strong sides, The Lyons having to battle hard for the full 90 minutes against the well organised Irish Centre from Huddersfield. The visitors had the better of the chances in the first half but they couldn’t hit the goal, the Irish centre’s goalkeeper Brian Giles pulled off a brilliant save from Chris bell and shortly after that good work from Warren Byrne passed it to Gavin Cogden and his shot beat the Irish Centres keeper but smashed against the crossbar, Half Time saw the scores level at 0-0.

After the break both sides started brightly with some good football on display. The turning point came on the hour mark as the Hetton striker Byrne shot towards goal, Giles the Irish Centre Keeper had it covered comfortably; unfortunately the ball took a nasty bounce of the surface and bounced into the roof of the net passed a helpless Giles. A cruel way to go behind to make the scoreline 1-0 to Hetton. The Lyons kept pushing for another goal but the visitor’s keeper Giles pulled off some good saves, the Yorkshire side were pushing more men forward, looking to level the scores , but the Lyons defence kept strong to go in to the quarter final with a Hard Fought 1-0 win. The Irish Centre can feel extremely proud of their efforts as they came up against a very strong and capable side who have strength in depth. The Irish Centre left Spennymoor wishing Hetton all the best for the rest of the competition and as many said be fore this game, the winner of this years competition was very likely to come from Sunday's game.
