Houghton Mill All Stars crashed out of the County Cup
with a 7-0 defeat to a very good Sunderland Hastings
Athletic team from the Premier Division of the
Sunderland Sunday Morning League. Steelers FC earned
a 4-4 draw against Chester Osbourne with a last
minute equaliser from Iain Race. Stephen
Clifford had given the home side the lead and younger
brother Jamie Clifford put the Steelers 2-1 up with
Kieron Moralee grabbing the third to level the scores
at 3-3.
Washington JFC entertained Gilesgate Moor Hotel in a 1st Div league game, the first half belonged to the home team and they deserved the lead when Gilesgate`s Keeper James Winter parried a left wing cross by Middlemiss into the path of Andy Taylor who made sure by sidefooting the ball into the middle of the goal. The second half was a different game with Gilesgate putting Wash JFC under exstreme pressure especially in the last 30 mins, David ``The Cat`` Smith saved the home side on several occasions and dislocated his thumb in the process, Gilesgates forwards got through half a dozen times only to either miss the goal or have there shots stopped by the home sides keeper, a very close game overall just edged by the home side by the odd goal.
In the second round of the Spennymoor Town Fc League Cup premier division Pelton RAOB have to work really hard to overcome first division Washington Arms. In an enthralling encounter Pelton take the lead after twenty minutes through Craig Marron with the first of a well taken hat-trick. Washington respond well and just before the half time break equalise with a Chris Morrison strike from the edge of the box. After the interval the Arms start the stronger and take the lead with a Craig Smith corner kick that goes straight in at the near post. Shortly after Pelton are back on level terms, a David Surrey spot kick doing the damage. Pelton whistlt pushing forward for a winner are caught out with a fine breakaway goal from Chris Morrison. The Arms have Pelton rattled for a while but squander two good opportunities to extend their lead which proves costly. With only a minute of normal time remaining Craig Marron crashes home a Pelton equaliser to take the game into extra time. The extra period sees both sides missing chances before the tie is settled with a well struck third goal for Craig Marron. This League Cup 1st Round tie was a real see saw encounter.
The first 20 minutes were fought out in midfield and was fairly even with neither keeper unduly troubled, there was little evidence of what was to follow.Low Fell took the lead in the 28th minute when their forward broke through a somewhat weak challenge on the edge of the box and fired past the keeper who had no chance.
Witton drew level when Scott Embleton seized on a bad pass and raced clear to cleverly lob the advancing keeper.Soon afterwards Witton were in front when the impressive Ben Sanderson, returning after missing the last 3 weeks, converted a neat cross at the far post.The second half saw Witton seemingly gaining some control and it was no surprise when Embleton grabbed his 2nd and Witton’s 3rd with a great left foot drive into the top corner.Low Fell to their credit came back but were a little fortunate to grab a 2nd goal from what seemed an offside position.Witton then seemed to take total control when first Barrie Allport and then Sanderson again put them 5-2 in front.Witton then seemed to think that the job was done and invited Low Fell onto them, the Fell grabbed 2 late goals which left Witton hanging on at the end for a 5-4 win.
In the second round of the Castle Insurance Alan Smith Memorial Trophy Burnmoor CC had a comfortable 8-0 win away at Houghton Mill All Stars.The visitors were six up at the break with goals from Andrew Hall (2),Paul Taylor, John Caris, James Pounder and Michael Wright. Mill's onlyeffort was a great run at goal from Nick Thompson whose effort was cleared off the goal line. Burnmoor substitutes Luke Charlesworth and Tom Spurling both scored in the second half to heap further misery onto the All Stars and to put Burnmoor into the next round.
Kelloe WMC FC travelled to Pelaw Grange Dogs in the Castle Insurance Alan Smith Memorial cup and were soon ahead to a great finish from Kieran Megran. The visitors were were quickly 2-0 up inside 20 mins when John Jury struck from the edge of the box. With their first attack of the game, Pelaw scored from the edge of the box with a deflected strike after Kelloe struggled to clear their lines. Stuart Thompson then turned sharply to finish from outside the box to make the score 3-1 at half time. The second half was again dominated by Kelloe as their fitness showed as Colin Young and Stuart Thompson again added to the score with the game finishing 5-1 to the visitors.
