In the F.A. Carlsberg Sunday Cup 4th Round Hetton Lyons Cricket Club Travelled to Nottingham to take on the Scots Greys. The holders, Hetton Lyons, crashed out of the national trophy at Nottingham, they failed to produce the kind of form that brought them to Anfield last year, the Lyons failed to score for the first time this season and a poor performance from a strong side saw their dream of a return to merseyside slip away, the only goal of the game came early in the first half and Hetton never recovered from it or the slow start, A Johnston free kick in the first half and a Craig Ruddy shot in the second was the closest Hetton came to equalising, Finch pulled off two or three saves to keep Hetton in the game but they remained frustrated and resigned to a long trip home with no reward, Lyons Secretary David Leitch said " we didnt perform at the level we know we could and now were out, i have to take some of the blame as the preperation wasnt right with some of the players, we have to pick ourselves up for next week" Lyons next task is County Cup tie away at a rejuvinated Houghton Glendale
Houghton Mill All Stars went through to the JD Taxi's Cup Semi Finals after beating a stubborn Gilesgate Moor Hotel 4-3 in an exciting round three encounter. In wet and blustery conditions the only goal of the first half was after four minutes when an inswinging Steven Ashman corner kick deceivedeveryone to land in the corner of the net. Early in the second half Gilesgate 'keeper James Winter made a great save from Mill's David Hall only for Gary Adey to tap in the rebound. Gilesgate pulled a goal back on the hour mark when Andrew Hart headed home from close range and this spurred Gilesgate to press for the equaliser but some resolute defending from the Mill defence kept them at bay.An enthralling final fifteen minutes produced four goals. Mill's Gary Adey rounded the 'keeper for 3-1 and Kevin Johnston made it four firing in off the post. Gilesgate hit back through Paul West and a Robert Cooper header for 4-3. The lead was increased after Graham Fullarton smashed a superb 35 yard free kick into the top corner, giving Baines no chance in the Pelaw goal. Pelaw almost got back into the game in the opening minutes of the second half, Kevin Turnes hitting the post with an effort from just inside the area. Duke substitute Stewart Conlon put the game out of reach of the visitors though, climbing highest to head home a corner to make the score 4 - 1. Jamie Sherriff scored two identical goals, both again from corners, with him scrambling the ball over the line. County Cup 1st Round Sedgefield S Edmunds - 5
Easington HMS Victory - 3 2 Brian Fairhurst penalties
in the first half made the score 2 - 2 at half
time.Easington went 3 - 2 up but 2 goals by Stephen
Flockett and one from Andrew Beamson gave St Edmunds
5 - 3 win.
Ferryhill Surtees 3-0 Glendenning Arms Not a pretty game by any means, this match was contested on an awful pitch on a cold, windy day which saw both teams struggle to play much cohesive football. From the beginning conditions underfoot were difficult to say the least with players slipping and sliding and nobody really getting the game, or ball for that matter, under control. Glen were struggling to get out of their own half for the first ten minutes as Surtees had both the slope and wind to their advantage and had attempted a couple of speculative efforts before forcing a breakthrough from a corner after 11 minutes. The ball was delivered deep from the left and was half cleared before being forced back into the right side of the area where Snaith fired a shot towards the far post which struck Glen skipper Paul Anderson and beat the helpless Grant before he could react. Surtees continued to use the conditions to their advantage and despite their best efforts to play their usual passing game Glen were becoming increasingly frustrated as they controlled the last 25 minutes of the first half and saw several moves end in nothing with Sanderson twice slicing shots wide, Anderson firing a free-kick over the bar and Winter coming agonisingly close to making contact with a superb cross from full-back Sean Glendinning when he seemed certain to score. The closest Glen came was from a left-wing corner which was delivered into the area by Chris Wharton and the resulting scramble seeing Pearson, Sanderson and Winter have shots blocked before Surtees managed to clear their lines. The second half should have given Glen the opportunity to get the goal they were after but, rather than taking advantage of their superiority several more chances were spurned and the final pass was always overhit, badly placed or blocked by a Surtees defender. The Glen's best chance fell to Winter who beat the Surtees centre back and drove into the left side of the area but his shot found the side netting when he should really have done better. As Glen continued to press forward for the equaliser they found themselves twice exposed on the counter attack, firstly on 68 minutes when a good ball from midfield found Surtees striker Dale Aunger in space 20 yards out and, after selling Grant a dummy, rounded the stranded keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net. The third goal came with only a minute to play. Again, a ball from midfield was Glen's undoing as Lee Hutchinson found space in the left channel and strode onto the pass before dinking the ball over the on-rushing keeper to give Surtees the points and a score-line which flattered them.

The Arms open the scoring with a David Lyall strike on the twenty minute mark; however in a fruitful fifteen minute spell Gavin Barton blasts Kelloe into the lead with a well taken hat-trick. A John Robson goal with twelve minutes remaining gives the Arms a lifeline but Kelloe hung on to take the three points and move closer to the top spot. Sedgefield St. Edmunds entertained Pelton RAOB and won 3-1 Pelton opened the scoring after 25 minutes, and it stayed 1 - 0 until half time, but 3 second half goals one from Eddie Johnson (55mins) and two fine strikes from left back Mark Ferguson (65 & 75 mins) gave Sedgefield a 3-1 win. In the Fourth Division Despite having 4 first team regulars missing Witton Gilbert managed to record their first league victory of the season with a battling 3-2 win at Pelton Bird Inn. A very good first Half with the scores level at 2-2.Witton Club opened the scoring through John Renwick who netted from 12 yards with his left foot. The lead was short lived as Pelton equalised direct from a free kick just outside the box which found its way through the Witton defensive wall.Witton regained the lead when a goalmouth scramble led to the ball falling at Jack Cleckners feet and he finished smartly. Again the lead didnt last long, a free kick was awarded and the resultant free kick was deflected in from 6 yards by the Pelton striker. The second half was a different story however and Pelton had a lot of possession but were guilty of missing some good opportunities. With 20 minutes remaining Witton were awarded a free kick and Ian Renwick curled the ball in over the keepers head from 25 yards for a gutsy win for Witton. Ferryhill Surtees were 4-2 winners over visistors Sedgefield Crosshills, The Duke of Albany were 7-0 Home winners over Quarrington Hill Wmc.
The Glendenning Arms entertained Langley Park Sports and Social this was a game which the Glen managed to throw away from a winning position. The opening five minutes were fairly even and saw both teams win themselves corners which came to nothing as they battled to gain control of the match. The first shot on goal came in the 9th minute. Langley Park forward Tony Rutter picked the ball up 25 yards out, wriggled through two challenges and forced Glen keeper Andy Grant into a smart save at his near post. This stirred Glen into life and they could have taken the lead in the 11th minute after a nice passing move involving Sanderson, Dixon and Wardle saw the ball worked out left to Wharton. His first touch wrong-footed Langley Park full-back Michael Cant and gave him room to dink a cross in for Wardle, who had carried his run from midfield, to flick his header over the bar from eight yards. Glen continued to play the better football and worked Langley keeper Peter Caulfield again in the 18th minute with an Andrew Goodburn shot from 20 yards out. Despite not having much possession Langley managed to have a couple of strikes at goal themselves. In the 29th minute a free kick 25 yards out was bent just wide of Grant's left hand post by Langley skipper Keith Caulfield and two minutes later Michael Watson's 20 yard effort was saved comfortably by Grant in the middle of his goal. Glen's passing and movement in midfield was causing Langley all kinds of problems and proved their undoing in the 37th minute. Some good passing found Glen captain Paul Anderson wide on the left and a nice piece of skill afforded him the room a whip over a cross which was missed by the goalkeeper and diverted in at the far post by Langley left-back Simon Huscroft under pressure from Andrew Wood. Three minutes later an excellent sliding challenge from Anderson stopped Rutter having a clean run on goal after he looked to have been put clear half way into the Glen half of the field. The first half didn't see any further chances and ended with Glen a goal to the good. The lead was increased just over a minute into the second half. A loose ball was picked up in the centre circle by Ben Sanderson who spotted Winter in space between the right-back and centre-back and fed him with a superb ball which he strode onto and stroked into the bottom right corner of the net. Langley got a goal back on 50 minutes when a left wing corner was slammed into the net by Keith Caulfield seven yards out .. Glen went on in search of a third goal and almost found it in the 53rd minute when Winter's flicked header from a Paul Dixon cross hit the face of the bar and evaded Wood at the far post. Langley were looking dangerous on the counter and the pace of Rutter forced Wharton to make an excellent challenge on the edge of the box when he looked to have found a way though the Glen's back line. Glen again went close when Goodburn played Wardle through in the left channel but his cross evaded Dixon by inches as he through himself at it at the far post. The third goal came a minute later. Some more good work by The Glen midfielder, bent a dipping effort beyond the keeper but onto the crossbar. The rebound was picked up by Winter who turned sharply eight yards out and slid the ball under the keeper with his left foot on the half turn for his second of the match. Glen then seemed to switch off and allowed Langley back into the game. On 62 minutes Grant was called into action when Rutter had an effort from 20 yards and a scramble in the Glen area in the 77th minute saw the keeper make another smart save low to his left. Langley scored what appeared to be a goal on 88 minutes when Keith Caulfield forced the ball in at the far post for his second goal after some confusion in the Glen back line. Langley too heart from this and managed to force an equaliser in the 90th minute. The ball was fired over from the left and keeper Grant came sliding out to collect it three yards out but was met by Paul Humberstone which saw the ball squirm into the net to make it 3-3 .The final whistle was sounded moments later and saw Langley Park collect a point and see both clubs continue their recent unbeaten runs.

It was Shadforth who got the game under way and started brightest. The first chance of the game fell to Shadforth's tall front man Jack Moore after a good cross from the left, he sidefooted the ball from 8 yards but it drifted wide of the far post. The Duke were fighting their way back into the game and it was they who took the lead, albeit with a touch of good fortune and still slightly against the run of play. A ball was played forward from midfield and as the Shadforth defender tried to clear it, he inadvertently lobbed his own keeper to give the home side the lead. This gave the Duke a lift and they started to take a hold of the game, closing the Shadforth players down quickly and passing the ball well. On the half hour mark the Duke extended their lead when a free kick was turned home by Liam Barnett, his first for the club. The referee brought the first half to a close as the home side went in leading 2-0. In the second half, Shadforth once again started with good intent, pressing forward and looking to get an early goal to get back into the game. With only one up front though, they struggled to trouble the Duke defence with the second balls being mopped up and cleared. Richie Lowthian spurned 2 excellent opportunities to further extend the home team's advantage, but the Duke did eventually score a 3rd after excellent play from Steven Talbot who won the ball in midfield and carried it forward, he shot low and hard into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance. Almost immediately from the kick off, Shadforth got a lifeline, sloppy defending allowing Stephen Clifford to race into the box, he finished well past the onrushing keeper to make it 3-1. The game continued in the same vein, Shadforth looking for the long ball to the big front man Jack Moore, but the Duke defence dealing with the threat and crating chances on the break. In the NTL Transport Trophy 1st Round Glendenning Arms 4-3 Washington Colliery. This turned out to be an entertaining and very combative game in the first round of the NTL Transport League Cup and included two hat-tricks. Third Division Washington Colliery started the game as favourites but soon found that the Glen were no pushovers. The first chance of the game came on eight minutes and fell to Colliery, a ball between the central defenders finding Colliery's striker but his shot was straight at Glen keeper Andy Grant. Glen were playing most of the football but found themselves a goal behind in the 23rd minute, somewhat against the run of play. A ball down the Colliery right split the defence and found their striker just inside the area, Glen full-back Aaron White made a challenge and, although appearing to play the ball, a penalty was awarded by referee Quinn and duely dispatched by Colliery's number 10 who sent Grant the wrong way. Glen continued to probe and made chances without troubling Colliery's keeper, Sanderson sending a 23 yard free kick just wide of the keeper's left post on the half hour mark as well as dragging a mis-hit shot wide moments earlier. Glen almost fell further behind on 32 mins when Colliery broke forward, a shot from the edge of the area was blocked by the head of Glen central defender Summers and luckily hit the left post and bounced clear. Glen's equaliser came on 36 minutes. Captain Paul Anderson won the ball in the centre circle and fed Winter who had pulled into the left channel, he drove into the box and chipped a cross to the near post which Sanderson met with a flicked header, the ball hitting the foot of the post as it crossed the line. The match continued to be hard fought and several robust challenges went unpunished as the game headed towards half time. Colliery regained the advantage on 42 minutes with another breakaway goal. The ball was worked through the centre of the field before finding Colliery's striker 15 yards from goal, he evaded a challenge from Summers and tucked the ball into the right corner of the net from 9 yards out. Glen started to second half full of attacking intent and were soon troubling Colliery's back four as Sanderson got free just inside the area, unfortunately his shot was off target and drifted wide but this was to be the start of a period of Glen pressure. On 49 minutes Glen forced a corner which was swung in by Turnbull from the right, Anderson got a flick to it at the near post which struck a Colliery defender on the arm for a penalty which Anderson himself took. His spot kick had enough power to find the net despite Colliery's keeper getting a hand to it. Glen continued to pressurise in pursuit of a third goal and went close on a couple of occasions, most notably with Wardle putting a 25 yard effort just over the bar. Colliery should have taken the lead themselves on 62 minutes but the striker's shot rattled the crossbar from ten yards when it was surely easier to score. Colliery did re-take the lead shortly after this on around 64 minutes. A corner from the right was only partially cleared and the ball was fired into the six yard box to be tucked away by Colliery's number 10 for his hat-trick when he looked to be a good yard offside. This seemed to stir the Glen back into life and the equaliser came immediately from the re-start, a good ball from Wardle found Sanderson's run and he made no mistake from 15 yards with a firm finish for his second goal. Glen were well in control at this stage and were finding plenty of space in midfield where Wardle and Goodburn's hard running was causing no end of trouble. The winning goal came from a good team move. Dixon picked up the ball at right back and fed Wardle in front of him, he skipped past a Colliery challenge and carried the ball over half way before feeding Paul Luke who had found space on the right touch-line. Luke's first touch allowed him time to size up his options and he produced an excellent low cross into the box which was prodded home by man-of-the-match Sanderson sliding in on the six-yard line for his hat-trick. Colliery continued to battle hard but could not find their way past the Glen's back four and resorted to long-range efforts which didn't trouble Grant in the Glen goal. Sanderson could have bagged himself a fourth on 80 mins when a nice pass from Luke found him in the area, a nice piece of skill left the Colliery central defender on his back but the left foot shot was sliced wide when everyone expected the net to bulge. Goodburn had a chance to put a gloss on the result with around a minute to go. After winning the ball 30 yards from goal the midfielder rampaged into the area but poked his shot wide under pressure from Colliery's central defender. The final whistle confirmed the Glen's victory and they advance into the second round.

Durham Sunday Football League kicked of Last Sunday

agreed to sponsor the Trophy this season.
Holders Of the Trophy Hetton Lyons Cricket Club who this season are playing at Spennymoors Northern League Ground opened their defence of the Trophy with a Solid 6-0 home win over the Plough Inn from Chester le Street. The Plough travelled away to Hetton Lyons Cricket Club in the 1st round of the League cup in what can only be described as an extremely difficult tie.
Right from the kick off the home side put pressure on the Plough and had us on the back foot. Hetton team completely dominated the opening game and had plenty of possession without threatening the away goal. The breakthrough came in the 12th minute when we gifted them a goal by giving away possession on the half way line, Hetton quickly broke down the left and crossed for the centre forward to head home. Hetton continued to press and doubled their advantage in the 20th minute when we cleared from a corner kick but didn’t get the 2nd ball; it fell to the feet of a Hetton player who made no mistake from 10 yards. Hetton managed to extend their lead in the 30th minute with a well worked goal, some neat passing resulted in the ball played down the right flank before being drilled across the goal for the centre forward to tap in from two yards. Once again Lyons came straight back at The Plough and continued to play some brilliant football and managed to make it 4-0 in the 35th minute with a superb team goal. Hetton's excellent passing and moving created an opening for the two forwards to then play a quick one two before firing home. H/T 4-0 the 2nd half told a different story as the away team raised their temp more and took the game to Hetton. The Plough managed to create a couple of good chances and possibly should have scored. Keith Lines had a couple of great efforts blocked by the centre half which were definitely goal bound and Joel Baddams also had a couple of good shots. Hetton did manage to increase their lead in the 55th minute when the ball was played down the right wing and then crossed in for the player to head past the outstretched hand of Hetton Keeper Witherspoon. The away side continued to grow in confidence and got more involved in the game and started to pass the ball about. The Lyons finished the game off in the 75th minute with a moment of brilliance from the little number 10, the ball was played forward to the right hand side of the area, he managed to drag the ball back and then slip the ball past Curl before firing the ball in the back of the net. To Make the score 6-0 to Hetton Superb goal. Plough Midfielder Nathan Baddams man of the Match for the Plough. At a wind swept Kelloe recreation park fourth division Kelloe Davey Lamp were no match for their division one visitors Washington Arms in the 1st round of the League Cup sponsored by Spennymoor Town FC. Starting the game with a stiff wind against them the Davey Lamp lads defended stoutly and were encouraged to go into the half time break only two down, a Danny Murray opener and a deflected own goal causing the damage. However Davey Lamp could not profit from the wind behind them and the Washington Arms went on to totally dominate the remainder of the game, a superb hat-trick from Carlo Barrass and Vinny Moran goal giving the Arms a comfortable 0-6 win. Pelaw Grange Dogs FC were away in the League Cup 1st round, sponsored by Spennymoor Town FC to Gilesgate Moor Hotel FC . Pelaw Grange Dogs gave The Gilesgate Moor Hotel too much respect in the 1st half and defended for the first 35 minutes without putting any pressure on Gilesgate. They then paid the price from a deflected free kick that was headed passed their keeper Tony Johnson in goal. Little changed up until half time. After the interval Pelaw had a good attacking move but then on the counter attack Gilesgate scored from close range to make it 2-0. Both sides then either hit the post or crossbars before substitute Anthony Nicholson for Pelaw scored with his first touch to make it 2-1. Gilesgate substituted 18 year old Craig McManus who had tired. Temporary keeper John Winter for Gilesgate kept the score at 2-1 with some point blank saves and Tony Johnson for Pelaw tipped the ball over the bar however in the last 2 minutes Gilesgate scored twice to make the score an unrealistic 4-1.The Match Referee Shaun Hudson had a very good Game. Fenn was upended in the penalty area but got up to put away the resulting penalty kick for his hat trick and a 3-2 Mill lead, but Net Park soon struck back. Philip Tailorson equalised, and with only two minutes remaining and a penalty shoot out looming, Nicky Walker curled a wonderful left footed free kick from twenty yards out into the corner of the net for the winner. The Rams Head at Langley Park Needed extra Time to beat Visistors East Rainton Travellers Rest 6-5,Premier Side Brandon Bay Horse were 3-1 Home winners over Birtley Board Inn.

In the Only League Game played in the Fourth Division was a Washington Derby game between The Colliery Fact and Visitors the Oxclose Ox and Plough.Colliery were forced to change their Keeper fro this Game with regular keeper Alan Newbrook absent meaning Gordon Harrison played in goal. Michael Harmieson returned from absence. This was our first home game for a long time but didn't immediately get to grips with the space. The Colliery opened the scoring when Craig Neal scored a header from close range following good team work and a good cross from brother Gavin who was recalled after being a sub on Tuesday. The Colliery should have kicked on from this but didn’t and the Ox pulled back shortly afterwards following some defensive uncertainty. Again we took the lead through Craig Neal after strike partner Mark Wallis played in a clever though ball but, the Ox fought back a second time. Half time the Colliery Made One Change John Kelly was replaced by Chris Trewitt. Mark Wallis had a good chance to score in his 3rd consecutive game to make it 3-2 a few minutes later but couldn't get enough on his close range header which went wide whilst under pressure. Dan Clark and Michael Harmison came on for Ross Docherty and Mark Wallis as The colliery went out to win the game those changes paid dividends a few minutes later with Dan Clark being denied a headed goal for the second week in a row, following a good save from the Oxclose keeper. The Colliery Finally did take the lead when Craig Neal got his hat trick with a really well taken finish. Craig Made it 4 with 10 minutes left, to take his tally to 6 goals in 3 games. But, in typical Colliery style we sat back and invited pressure when the Ox Scored again but we held on to make it 2 wins out of 2.

Third Division side Sedgefield Net Park were well deserved winners against first division Houghton Mill All Stars in the first round of the League Cup sponsored by Spennymoor Town.Martin Broom netted twice to put Sedgefield 2-0 ahead and the lead may have been more but for some excellent saves from Mill keeper Dan Pearson. Mill left it late in the game before starting their fight back - Jamie Parker slammed the ball against the Sedgefield upright before Steve Fenn scored in the 75th and 85th minute to make it 2-2 and take the game into extra time.
