Two Former winners of the Football Association Sunday Cup met in the Quarter Final of the Avec Durham County Sunday Cup at Eppleton Cw . Home Side Hetton Lyons Cricket Club entertained Coundon Cons on Sunday this time the prize at stake was a place in the County Cup Semi-final against Owton Manor from Hartlepool, Cons last visit to Hetton had seen them knockout the Hosts of the F.A. Sunday Cup in their own back garden and so both sides were focused on progressing into the semi, the two clubs have been arguably the best in the region over the last couple of seasons and the fact that they know each other so well made the game a tight affair, Hetton were quicker out the blocks than the visitors and were awarded a penalty after a trip on Ruddy, Adam Johnston's spot kick was brilliantly saved by keeper Barry Posket but he was powerless to stop Johnston tapping home the rebound, both sides had other opportunities in the half including a cracking Paul Bailes effort which hammered against the Lyons crossbar, Johnston and Cogdon both pressed Poskett into action but the scoreline stayed that way until the turning point of the match midway through the second period, referee Paul Thompson injured his calf which forced linesman Mark Moore into the middle, after a lengthy delay the game restarted with only one linesman and a stand in, Coundon were level soon after with Steven Jones rising highest in the box to head past Finch, Gary Ankers was sent off for Coundon for a second book able offence in the 80th minute but the match was decided in the 93rd minute Jason Ainsley's forward pass found Steven Capper who ran through to finish past Poskett, there was a further 7 mins added time but Coundon couldn’t find a way through a stubborn Hetton backline. Lyons manager Brad Groves said after the game " the talking point about this day will undoubtedly be the winning goal, I’ve spoken with different people on either side of the pitch, some said he was on-side and some said off-side, it was always going to be the toughest of games Coundon are a good side, we didn’t play particularly well today but got the only thing that mattered- the result". The venue for the semi-final next week is Spennymoor Town's Brewery Field.
Brandon Bay Horse Entertained Burnside Wmc in the 3rd round of the NTL Transport League Cup. In a very entertaining Game Brandon ended up 4-3 winners, with Scott Bryden firing in the winner, in the last minute of extra time. The game had ended normal time at 2-2, Graham Stobbs putting Brandon two goals ahead, but a spirited fight-back by Burnside saw them take the game to extra time. Burnside then took the lead in the first half of extra time with a well executed free kick. In the second period of extra time Brandon found the character that had been missing for most of the game and pinned Burnside back. It was a matter of time before the equaliser, and it came courteous of Stobbs from the penalty spot after Michael Fort was felled in the box. Stobbs second hat-trick in as many games. The relentless pressure then saw Brandon snatch the winner at the death.
In the second round of the Lasertech Knockout Cup Pelaw Grange Dogs Fc entertained AFC Newton Hall the Game finally got the go ahead to play on a re arranged pitch at the Northern Area after the southern Area Pitches were closed due to being badly damaged and the poor recent weather. The pitch at the northern area was soft and had been sanded in places making it difficult for the players but Russell Fowler placed the ball in the top corner for the dogs after they had dominated most of the play. Once again Pelaw didn't capitalise on the possession with Kevin Turnes and Chris Hawkins going close, however after an injury to Chris Hawkins AFC Newton Hall had a corner a minute before half time and Pelaw's players simply watched the Newton Hall Players attack the ball and head easily into the net to make the score 1-1 at half time. In the second half after having most of the possession again they had failed to score but Luke Shalgosky who came on for Russell Fowler assisted Neil Worley to score from close range in around the 68th minute. David Donnelly and Gary Ryan were working hard in midfield but AFC Newton Hall came back at Pelaw and two good saves and a last minute save by keeper Scott Pattison made them the winners 2-1 at the final whistle by referee Mr. M Forbes who had a good game. David Elders and David Young came on for Phil and Chris Hawkins in the final five minutes. Also in the Lasertech Knockout Trophy Lumley FC were host's to Coxhoe WMC. Although Coxhoe dominated early on & failed to take advantage of a host of chances it was Lumley who took the lead when Bainbridge pounced from close range, Steven Roughly gave Lumley a 2-0 lead from the spot. In the 2nd half Lumley sealed an impressive 5-0 victory with goals from Ward, Watson & Tibbett. Brandon Sports were 4-0 Home winners over Shadforth Plough Inn,Sedgefield Crosshills Travelled to West Rainton Fc and in a very good Game they returned home 2-1 winners.
In the Premier Division Kelloe travelled to Pelton ROAB knowing it would be a stiff test with team players Graham Irving, Nick Gibson, Kieran Megran, Steven Weir, Ronnie Cairns and Andrew Soppitt all unavailable for selection. Kelloe started well kicking against a strong wind and took the lead when Gavin Barton finished from close range. Pelton then came into the game and took a deserved 2 - 1 lead just after half time. Going into the last 30 minutes, Kelloe bounced back to 2 - 2 with a volley from Dean Smithson. The goal then lifted Kelloe and 3 quick strikes from John Jury and another 2 from top goalscorer Gavin Barton settled the game 5 - 2.Ferryhill Wmc were 4-1 winners at Fatfield Biddick Inn, while in an entertaining game at Houghton the Glendale and visitors Langley Park Wmc shared the points in a 2-2 draw.
In the First Division Sacriston WMC kept up their league division one title challenge with a fine 2-1 away win at Houghton Mill All Stars. Mill took an early lead when David Hall blasted home a left wing cross from Kevin Johnston. Then, midway through the first half Sacriston were awarded a penalty kick only for Neil Burn to boot his effort over the bar. Mill led 1-0 at the break but Sacriston began the second half much the stronger side and were rewarded when Liam Burn fired in an equaliser on fifty minutes. After seventy minutes a poor goal kick from Mill keeper Dan Pearson landed at the feet of Neil Burn who ran at goal before slotting the ball past Pearson to give Sacriston the three well deserved points.Sacriston Cricket Club were 7-0 Home winners over Chilton Wmc.Pittington Fc were beaten 3-1 at Bishop Middleham Cross Keys, In a nine goal thriller at Sherburn the away side Chester Plough beat the Home side the Lambton Arms 5-4.Hetton Social won 2-1 at Durham Bede Lodge and Gilesgate Moor Hotel were 2-0 winners at Washington Lambton Village.
In the Second Division Quebec Steelers FC made the Long Journey to Silksworth, Sunderland to play their league fixture against Chester Osbourne. The game opened up with both teams making strong attacks, but it was Chester Osbourne who opened the scoring. Chester started the second half with a 1-0 lead, and continued to build on it. A small consolation came to Steelers, when they scored a penalty shortly in the second half, but then Chester ploughed away again, finishing the match 4-1.It was good to see a brand new referee on the day officiating his first ever match and it’s fair to say Stephen Clifford did a good job first time out.
In the Third Division in the only game played Bowburn Coopperage travelled to Washington colliery and in a very dull first half the score was 0-0 with not many chances for either team but a better second half from Bow burn saw them go level at the top of the league with three other teams as they went on to score 5 to Washington’s only 1 with goals from Mark Finnigan Robert Hurton an own goal and two from sub Raymond Pirt.
In the Big Division 4 Derby Game Witton Gilbert Wmc entertained the Witton Gilbert Glendenning Arms, Local pride was at stake in this match following a 1-1 draw earlier in the season and what the game may have lacked in quality it made up for in terms of commitment and effort from both sides. The blustery conditions did nothing to help the game and seemed to unsettle Glen far more than their opponents in the first half and they almost found themselves a goal down on five minutes when a right wing corner was flicked against the far post and scrambled clear with the Club's players convinced it had crossed the line. Witt on WMC continued to have the better of the game and stretched Liam Summers in the Glen goal on at least four more occasions before the second major incident of the game in the 29th minute. The ball was won well by Andrew Goodburn deep in his own half and he released David Wardle who burst forward and fed Ben Sanderson to his right.
Sanderson evaded a challenge from Wesley Waley before firing a low cross into the area which was layed off by Paul Anderson to Goodburn who had made up 60 yards to join the move, his scuffed shot was saved by Bryan Potts and then forced in by David Winter four yards out for what appeared to be the opening goal only to find it ruled out by referee Ball for an offside after having initially given the goal. This seemed to affect the Glen players' concentration and they fell behind to a soft goal seven minutes later when a shot was deflected past Summers by full back Sean Glendinning to give the Club the lead going into half time. Glen had the advantage of the wind at their backs for the second half and began to exert some pressure with Sanderson and Anderson causing problems for Witton's back line. The equaliser eventually came on 67 minutes after good work in midfield again created space behind the right-back. Skipper Paul Anderson had time to get his head up and bent in a perfect cross which was glanced inside the far post by David Winter from eight yards out. Glen had their tails up at this point and pressed forward looking for a second goal and duely found it on 74 minutes when Winter again popped up to find the net, this time a neat left footed finish from ten yards after good work from Sanderson. Glen then suffered a recurring fate of conceding late goals when a ball which should have been cleared three times was fired low towards the near post and poked in by Stan Latimer to level the scores at 2-2 with five minutes left. This was to be the final meaningful act and the game ended in a second draw of the season between these two sides. Washington Duke of Albany faced Pelton Bird Inn at Biddick School. Both teams were missing a few regulars, but it was the Duke who coped best with their depleted side, with a Mark Liddle penalty, Ryan Mason hat-trick and a Lee Munro solo effort putting the Duke 5 - 0 up before late goals from Craig Lavery and John Ruddock brought the score to 5 - 2.Langley Park Sports and Social were 4-1 winners at Kelloe Davy Lamp, The Much improved Neville’s Cross Social were 5-2 home winners over Bowburn Crowtrees.
