(Ball began his career playing for Portsmouth FC, instantly establishing himself as one of the finest defenders in the game, always committed to the cause. He later on had spells playing for Fulham and Burnley. However it was at Sunderland where he made his mark, in total he played in 389 matches for Sunderland. He acted as the clubs manager during the 2005-06)
