Pre season Friendly Sacriston Cicket Club 6-1 Thornley
Well the first friendly of our pre-season could be described only really as a decent run out. The fixture was put together at the last minute and was organised the night before the game.
We had originally organised to play away to Ashington but for whatever reason they decided to cancel the game. This lead to our manager having to frantically try and find a new opponent for us to play.
We started the game slowly which was to be expected as the preparation in the lead up to the game was pretty shocking but kind of expected and understandable what with it being such a last minute re-arranged game. They went ahead after 6 minutes with there centre forward scoring from a corner with a decent header, he was left unmarked however. It took us awhile to get our passing game together but when we did it was pretty easy to break down the opposition from Sunderland. Our wing backs started to get forward more often and it was John Robson who supplied the cross for Yates who chested the ball down and he struck the ball in the bottom corner to make it 1-1 after 14 minutes. Good play from Gary Draper who drove through there defence and then tried to place the ball past the keeper, it was drifting wide but Yates followed in and had an easy tap in for the second. It was very good play from G. Draper again for the third. A good through ball from Colly and Draper was away. He burst through there defence again to get clear and was aided by a lucky deflection from there keeper from his attempted finish but he gathered the rebound and put it away. Fourth goal came from a corner. G.Draper passed it straight to Fenton who looked up asif to cross the ball into the box but deliberately curled the ball into the roof of the net. A good finish.
Fifth goal was a good quick break with a ball shifted up front and Kev Coates won a header to put Yates through who finished with a curling shot into the net from outside of the box.
The best goal of the day came from the mecurial Kristian Coils. A pass through from R. Draper and Coils took a quick look up to see the keeper off his line and with a brilliant lofted finished chipped the keeper from outside the box. Quality.
Both sets of lads stayed for a few drinks in the club afterwards which was good to see and lets hope this good win leads to a good season for us.
Goal summary:
14 min - Chris Yates (8/10) John Robson supplied the cross, and Chris Yates found the net from just inside the box with a tremendous right footed effort.
16 min - Chris Yates (6/10) A textbook right footed finish from six yards out by Chris Yates, following a goalmouth scramble. Gary Draper claimed an assist.
39 min - Gary Draper (7/10) Andrew Collinson supplied the through-ball, and Gary Draper found the net from just inside the box with a well-finished right footed effort.
53 min - Stuart Fenton (8/10) A well delivered corner from Gary Draper was converted by Stuart Fenton. A first-class finish with the right foot from long range.
55 min - Chris Yates (8/10) Chris Yates fired home from long range with a tremendous right foot goal, following a through-ball from Kevin Coates.
75 min - Kristian Coils (9/10) A spectacular individual goal and a moment of magic! Good lead up play from Rob Draper led to Kristian Coils scoring from long range with the right foot.

Pre Season Friendly
High Handenhold Bird Inn 5-4 Washington Colliery fc
Good effort for last pre-season game before new season starts next week.

Changes were made in defence after Wayne, Mouldy and Andy didn't turn up which meant we had to play two make shift full backs in John and Gezza but played well seems as though they both normally play in midfield.

Game started off with us on the back foot and opposition took the lead after 10 minutes following counter attack leaving us caught at the back. We then responed a few minutes later when Beano scored the equaliser with well taking shot inside the box.

Second half started off well with us taking the lead after 5 minutes, when a ball played through by Wallis set Beano up for his second. Unfortunately this didn't last long when a few minutes later their number 11 cut inside and fired from outside the box beating Tom to the top corner. 15 minutes later changes were made and two new lads Stewart and Ryan were brought on in place of Gezza and Doc. This proved to show a little inexperience down the right hand side, when High Hadenhold Bird Inn scored 3 goals in the space of 15 minutes making us go down to 5-2. Although this happened we did play well to get back into it when two balls over the top helped Beano grab his third and fourth goal of the game but he could've easily had another two.

Overall I thought this was a good experience for what we will be playing against this season, and a lot of positives can be taken from this friendly. Dale Reid - Assistant player manager
Goal summary:
15 min - Craig Neal (6/10) A flurry of activity in the area led to a goalmouth scramble. Craig Neal took advantage by scoring a clinical right footed goal from close range.
50 min - Craig Neal (7/10) A well delivered through-ball from Mark Wallis was converted by Craig Neal. A great finish with the right foot from 18 yards out.
80 min - Craig Neal (7/10) A well-finished individual goal and a moment of inspiration! Good lead up play led to Craig Neal going on a solo run, and scoring a right footed goal from long range yards.
85 min - Craig Neal (7/10) A well-finished individual goal and a moment of inspiration! Good lead up play led to Craig Neal going on a solo run, and scoring a right footed goal from 18 yards out yards.

Former Pelton Roab Player Signs On Loan for Gateshead Fc.
GATESHEAD expect to boost their firepower for the forthcoming Blue Square Premier campaign with the six-month loan signing of Hartlepool United striker Michael Mackay. The Tynesiders have struggled to replace Conference North Golden Boot winner Lee Novak this summer, missing out on several targets. However, Steven Richardson was snared early on - and former Ireland Under-19 international Darren Forsyth was signed last week.Mackay, who has made 25 starts and 35 appearances off the bench for Pools, will now fill the fourth striking birth and will remain at Gateshead until January 31.There is no clawback clause, so the pacy Mackay will play exclusively for Gateshead - having been a prolific scorer at non-league level before joining Hartlepool in February 2007.Mackay has a good track record at Pelton Roab , Birtley Town, Durham City and Consett - and Gateshead boss Ian Bogie believes the Durham-born player will prove to be an astute capture.

Want to be a Winner
Want to be a winner? Forget the song because blue is not the colour. Red cards may spell disaster in football, but red kit is a different matter entirely. A study has found that teams in red are more successful than those whose home shirts are yellow, white or blue.

Research by scientists at Durham and Plymouth universities, published in the Journal of Sports Sciences, claims that deep-seated biological responses to colours affect teams' performances. English league results since the Second World War were analysed, looking at how teams did when they were at home, therefore wearing their first-choice shirts. It was found that, of the top 68 sides, teams wearing red won more often at home, while sides in yellow or orange had the worst records. In away games, when teams tend to wear a variety of colours over the years, there was no difference in performance. Research also suggests that Olympic competitors wearing red are also more likely to enjoy success. In nature, red is often associated with male aggression and display, suggesting high levels of testosterone. Male mandrills, for example, have red coloration on their faces, rumps and genitalia that they use to communicate their fighting ability to other males. So teams in red will subconsciously feel tougher, as well as intimidating the opposition.

“We see a couple of possible explanations,” Professor Robert Barton, of Durham University, said. “Firstly, over time supporters may have been subconsciously more attracted to a club wearing red, so the club has developed an increasing resource base within its community. “Secondly, there may be a positive psychological boost from wearing red, or being associated with a red team, that is reflected on the field of play. Competing against a team in red could also impair performance.”
Three of the Barclays Premier League's top four - and the three most successful teams in English football - Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool, wear red. So do Bristol City and Stoke City, at the top of the Coca-Cola Championship, although teams in white are prevalent at the head of the Football League's bottom two divisions.
Over the years, there is no doubt that the red halves of Manchester, Bristol, Nottingham and Stoke - and the claret-and-blue part of Birmingham, for that matter - have outdone their city rivals. Not that Nottingham Forest fans, with their team presently in League One, would have much truck with the notion that their historical success was down to their choice of kit rather than the managerial genius of Brian Clough. However, Sir Alex Ferguson would concur that kit colour is significant. In 1996, the United manager blamed his team's grey away kit for a 3-0 half-time deficit against Southampton. “The players couldn't pick each other out,” he said. The side switched to white tops at the break, lost 3-1 and the kit was consigned to history. Being unable to see each other is not an excuse that Chelsea's players can use when they are wearing their present luminous yellow change strip.

The researchers concede that the financial acumen of the likes of Roman Abramovich is more than adequate compensation for the disadvantage of Chelsea's blue kit. Dr Russell Hill, also from Durham University, said: “It is certainly true that the influx of wealthy foreign owners has changed the resources available to some teams and this should result in increased success, regardless of their shirt colour. “Nevertheless, in close matches where teams are evenly balanced, we still predict that wearing red could tip the balance between success and failure and the red advantage will still persist.”
Groves Looks For Real Buzz

Spennymoor’s new chairman Brad Groves says that he wants to create a real “buzz” in the town following his appointment. Groves, who has masterminded the growth of Sunday League side Hetton Lyons into one of the top Sunday sides in the country, said that he jumped at the chance to be involved with Moors after he was offered the opportunity by vice chairman Alan Courtney and committee members Phil Gallagher and Billy Beasley two months ago. “Several clubs have approached me to become involved with them in the past, but because of my business, I’ve never really had the time,” he told The Northern Echo.
“But what impressed me most about Spennymoor was the enthusiasm and commitment of the people at the club, and how passionate the supporters are. Spennymoor has a great footballing heritage and a great track record, and there is a strong fan base. I want to help get the buzz back into the town.” Groves helped Moors financially last season when they were struggling. “I funded their away trip to Bideford in the FA Vase, for example. “But one thing I have emphasised is that the club must be self financing eventually. I’m happy to put funds into the club for the first year for the transition period, but after that, the club has to be self sufficient. But Spennymoor are one of the few clubs that can be very strong and have good gates. “We’re aiming for a squad of 23 players, so then we have cover in all positions. We’ve got to have strength in depth if we’re trying to win the league and cup competitions.”
