Tommy 'Premier Passions' Porter the League's Hero

Graham Lilley and Chris Wray.

Groundsman of the Year
The new football season may be less than a month old, but six grassroots Groundsmen have already been rewarded for their hard work on the pitch... The FA Groundsman of theYear Awards are in their second year, and at an awards ceremony at Windsor Racecourse, the national winners collected their prizes from Tommy Walsh of BBC's 'Groundforce' fame, Gareth Roberts, Sponsorship Manager of FA Partner Carlsberg and Steve Parkin, FA National Game Director. FA Leagues Manager, Mike Appleby, said the awards came about as a way of recognising the hard work put in by groundsmen up and down the country. "Everyone was being rewarded for their work apart from the groundsmen and yet the pitch is the most important part of the process. "They often have to do the work single-handed and normally for no reward - much of their work is voluntary," he added. "With this in mind, these national winners have all done a wonderful job, more often than not on very limited budgets." A team of professional groundsmen and turf care professionals was drafted in to act as judges as the 155 nominations were whittled down to regional and then to the national champions. Appleby added: "Quality pitches are essential for the development of the game at every level - poor playing facilities can seriously hamper this development and continued participation." The Groundsman of the Year competition is part of a wide-ranging FA plan to improve facilities. Some 97% of all affiliated football is played outside the Football League and research by the Football Foundation found drainage problems and lack of changing rooms were the biggest bug bears. The FA is now addressing these concerns as part of a national facility development strategy, where local stakeholders are being encouraged to identify facilities most in need of 2003 National Winners: Nationwide Conference - Rod Pippard - Yeovil Town Ryman League & overall Level 2 winner - Peter Ash - Aylesbury United Dr Martens League - Peter Allen - Moor Green UniBond League - Alf Padena - Radcliffe Borough Level 3 & Below Leagues - Tommy Porter - Durham City FC Local Authority - States of Jersey Tommy Premier Passions Porter Former Sunderland Afc Grounds man Tommy Porter, the man who put true zest and spirit into Premier Passions, has been named by the FA as the country's top non-league groundsman. Tommy who Turned 70 in the summer, the former farm worker retired as Sunderland's head grounds man five years ago and Now plies his trade at Grass Roots Level with Albany Northern League club Durham City at the Archibald’s Stadium. Though Tommy is now hard of hearing’ ("all that machinery") and his elbows won't straighten ("all that bending") he has lost neither his enthusiasm nor his appetite for working and preparing Durham’s Football Field. On his day off, he looks after his greenhouse and his three gardens. Famously outspoken in the TV Premier Passions, the five-part fly-on-the-wall television documentary about Sunderland's last season at Roker Park, he was the only person for whom a bleep test seemed unnecessary. Manager Peter Reid, conversely, managed 15 f-words in one sentence. "It made Roy 'Chubby' Brown look like an advert for Blue Peter," observed the fanzine A Love Supreme at the time. "Every time Tommy Porter came on the screen we listened and nodded," ALS added. At City's handsome but altogether humbler stadium, Tommy swears he's never been happier in his life - but as well a good grounds man might, calls a spade a spade. Think back to the last time we were in the Premiership and, more specifically, to the Premier Passions documentary. Remember the enduring images of the fated TV programme? What were they for you? Peter Reid making Roy Chubby Brown look like an advert for Blue Peter? Bob Murray and John Fickling discussing the style of taps in the new stadium instead of Premiership survival? Sure, these things stay in the memory. Then there were the "fans." The producers enlisted the help of a posh schoolgirl, a lab technician, a decorator and someone who looked suspiciously like Paul Whitehouse - all professing to be life-long fans. Their interviews appeared contrived and lacking somewhat in passion. One man, however, unwittingly summed up the feelings of thousands, and in the wake of the series, the thoughts and attitudes of a humble grounds man remained imprinted on our hearts and minds. Every time Tommy Porter appeared on screen, we listened and nodded. I joined Tommy at his new place of work, the home of Sunderland Reserves and Durham FC, The Archibald Stadium "I've been supporting Sunderland since the day I was born. I was in the Roker End with my father, on his shoulders, shouting for the Lads when I was only a tiny youngster. Probably five or six, even, and I've always supported them. I was that thrilled with the fervour of everybody that it was forever etched in my memory. Charlie Hurley was my favourite player, without a doubt. I tried to copy him, because I played centre half when I was a youngster - my ambition was to be like him and of course it didn't happen! But I idolised Charlie Hurley, I thought he was superb. " One of the best matches I've ever saw was on the way to Wembley in 1973, when we beat Man City at Roker Park and Vic Halom scored. There was a chap next to me who said "I'll see you at Wembley' before the game. After the match, he was crying and he said "I told you, I'll see you at Wembley!' "Out of all the recent players, my favourite was Kevin Ball, just for his honesty, endeavour and working ability, not necessarily for his skill - though I thought he was a lot more skilful than people appreciated him for. Kevin Ball was a rock and he was Sunderland through and through. I was just sad to see him leave. He was fabulous to be around, absolutely tremendous. Him and I got on very, very well, but I think everyone got on with Kevin. As long as you did your bit, he would appreciate you for it, "cos he did his bit too." "The low point of working at Sunderland had to be the relegation from the Premiership, but I loved working at the training ground and seeing how the players were getting on and I also enjoyed being the head grounds man at Roker Park. It was fantastic, much better than my time at the Stadium of Light, because you had a free run, there wasn't anybody stopping you doing your job." Supporting Sunderland wasn't Tommy's only passion, gardening also played a large part in his life? When the opportunity to become Sunderland's grounds man arose in 1986, Tommy knew it was the perfect job for him. "Before I was a grounds man, I did all sorts of things, though I have been a gardener all my life. Now, I've been a grounds man for fifteen years, starting when Denis Smith was manager. They wanted somebody to look after the training ground, so I put my CV in and got the job straight away. When I started work at the Charlie Hurley Centre, the grass was two foot six high and there was one supposed pitch at the far side." The years that Tommy spent at the club were some of the most turbulent ever. In such an intense, ever-changing atmosphere, Porter is in an ideal position to compare the different managers he's worked for. "I thought Denis Smith was a good manager. If he'd got the money, he would have been great for Sunderland Football Club. Malcolm Crosby was absolutely brilliant. A great lad. I wasn't keen on Terry Butcher, although I think he did his best - he just wasn't with it. Mick Buxton was a gentleman through and through. I wouldn't put Peter Reid at the top - as a person or a manager. I got on with him until we moved to the new stadium, but after that it was a very difficult situation." A "difficult situation" which ended in Tommy's sad departure from the club he has always loved. Tommy pinpoints one man who was responsible for his exit. "The then Stadium Manager, Dave Nicholson - I thought he was a really naughty piece of work. He's not there now, which, in my opinion, is good for Sunderland Football Club. He always seemed to be doing his best to knock me back whenever he could - he didn't want me there from the start. I don't know why, perhaps it had something to do with Premier Passions. I expected to be head grounds man, but he made damn sure I wouldn't be. He made all the decisions, but when the bullets flew, he stepped back. "One Thursday night he came in and said: "You can go now, you're retiring, aren't you?' I couldn't even say goodbye to anyone, because it was after 5pm and they'd all gone home. And that was after fourteen years there. Nicholson was the worst person I've ever worked for in my life. I reckon that losing him was the best thing to happen to Sunderland since getting rid of McMenemy. I've got no bitterness towards the club, but I'll always have bitterness towards Nicholson." Even now years after his departure, Tommy finds it difficult to understand why he was treated so poorly. He believes the writing was on the wall long before his eventual retirement, with the events surrounding the now infamous home game against Stockport County in the 1998/99 season, when the pitch was iced over. It is a story that illustrates just how strained relations between Porter, Peter Reid and Dave Nicholson had become. "I didn't like the forecast before the match, so I said to the security man that if there was any snow, he must phone me up. I got a call at quarter to five, telling me that the snow was on the pitch. Little did anybody know, I had always been barred from the boiler room by Mr Nicholson. But the match was going to suffer, so I dashed into the boiler room, pushed what I thought were the right buttons, and everything started up. Then I went outside to clear the snow from the field. There was nobody else there but me. When I went back to the boiler room, everything was working but there was no flame in the boiler. I phoned Nicholson on his mobile - he was in a hotel somewhere with his wife. I told him he'd better sort something out quick, because the boiler still wasn't firing, and I couldn't get it on because I hadn't been taught. A plumber and an electrician came and they couldn't get it started either. "The match eventually started with snow on the pitch, and we scraped a 1-0 win. Reidy called me in after the match and said that if we'd lost the match he would've sacked me. Nicholson just stood back the whole time and never opened his mouth. That was the final straw, and I just had to get out of there." It is an accurate measure of Tommy Porter's character that, despite the tension of his last two years at Sunderland, he still retains a deep affection for all things red and white - particularly the fans. "I've always had a marvellous rapport with the supporters, I couldn't go anywhere without being stopped. It's a little embarrassing sometimes but then once you get talking to them you realise that these supporters are the best in the world. Because I've supported them as I child, I know the passion of the fans. I still try to go to games when I can. Tommy's now concentrates on keeping the pitch at New Ferens Park in tip-top condition. Even at a quick glance, it's obvious that he has lost none of his legendary enthusiasm or skill. The pitch is immaculate, a Bowling Green, even after the 70 plus games it was subjected to last season; a testament to Tommy's hard work. It comes as no surprise that, when I suggest retirement, Tommy lets out a laugh before launching into another breathless sentence. "I've been at Durham City for two years and I'm still working six days a week. I honestly think that this club can get into the conference. We've definitely got the pitch! We'll see how the joints last but I'd like to be involved all the time here now." In an Interview with |

Peter Quinn
Club secretary and Plough favourite Peter Quinn has decided to tie the knot next year.
As we all know the most important thing about marriage is the stag do!! So were all going to Amsterdam (sight seeing of course) on 7th May 2010, which will include travelling to the dam via ferry, 1 night over there and then returning the following day via ferry.
Total cost will be £160 which includes the ferry and hotel. £20 deposits are due now and balance by 12th March.
The plan is to incorporate our end of season football trip with the stag do and therefore the football club will be looking to make a contribution for players towards the cost of the trip. At this stage, i dont know how much the club will pay towards the trip as it will depend on fund raising events between now and the end of season. One rule is that players subs must be paid up to date!
I need names as soon as possible from people who are definitely going so I can arrange to pay the deposit to Quinny.

Sedgefield Netpark
MEET NEW SIGNING JOE BURKE OUR FIRST LANCASHIRE DYNAMO.
When Sedgefield NETPark F.C started their recruitment drive for the summer there were three names given by Baggy who would improve the squad no end, Turland, Earnshaw and Burke. We got a glimpse of Earnshaw and Turland in pre season but had to wait till after the season started to see what Joe had to offer. Hailing from Preston, Lancs he is our first player from outside the north east alongside Rob Earnshaw who is from even further south. Joe has impressed management and playing staff with his undoubted ability on the ball but his energy and bursts into the penalty area make him an extremely valuable attacking midfielder. A player who has certainly been used to certain standards of football (including Uni I would imagine) Joe has had to adapt his game to the hustle and bustle of the Durham and District 3rd Division where you don’t get as much time on the ball to show how good a footballer you actually are more often than not there’s someone right up your arse ready to clean you out. Reading that back it may sound like Joe is a bad player and that is certainly not what I was aiming for, im simply stating I imagine Joe has played at a level where your given a bit of time on the ball and if you can’t play your soon found out (I loved that level too fella). Anyway a classy midfielder who’s range of passing is a delight to watch. He has a sumptuous first touch essential for “that level” and his fitness levels are exceptional something that really is essential to play in this league. Once Joe finds that consistency which all good players will find I expect to see him commanding games through his ability. A fantastic partner in the middle of the park for Kev Broom and we look forward to seeing him more on the social side as the season progresses. After bagging his first goal for the club at the weekend against East Rainton, NETPark News reporter Nick Walker caught up with Joe and got his thoughts on settling in with the lads.
The FA’s grassroots Goal of the Month competition is now live!
The FA and Sky Sports TV pundit Chris Kamara have teamed up to ask amateur footballers from up and down the land to show off their skills by uploading their best goals to The FA’s Official YouTube channel to mark the launch of their new Grassroots Goal of the Month competition.
The idea is simple. If you think you or your team have scored a screamer, be it everything from a 40-yard lob to a well worked tap in, then you simply upload the clip of the goal to www.youtube.com/TheFA.
At the end of each month Chris Kamara and his judging panel of experts will select a shortlist of three goals that will then go to the public vote.
The competition is open to any player and team playing in affiliated eleven-a-side adult football, and there are fantastic prizes on offer for the winning team. The winner of the first month’s competition (open until the end of November) will receive an amazing package for their team, comprising a bespoke Goal of the Month winners T-shirt, 18 pairs of the latest UMBRO Speciali football boots, a brand new team kit, 10 UMBRO Dynamis Laser Pro balls, the official matchball of The FA Cup, as well as training hurdles, cones and bibs.
Chris Kamara commented: “This is an unbelievable competition! I feel honoured to have been selected for the judging panel and I cannot wait to see all the fantastic goals come flooding in. The grassroots game is full of hidden talent and I’m really looking forward to hopefully finding the next Steven Gerrard or Wayne Rooney over the coming months.”
The FA’s Grassroots Goal of the Month competition is the latest initiative to come from The FA’s eleven-a-side recruitment campaign, which aims to inspire and support adults to keep playing eleven-a-side football. The FA has a stated objective to retain 30,800 men’s teams & 480,000 players by 2012.
"It's fabulous to be back home."

Stephen Johnson with his wife Joan.
17 October 2009
By By MARISSA CARRUTHERS
The words of Stephen Johnson in the arms of his devoted family as he returned to Wearside for the first time since being charged with murder on a Spanish holiday island 20 months ago – a crime he strongly denies.
"I never thought this day would happen," added the 54-year-old dad-of-three, who owns Stepys Coaches – which used to sponsor the Durham and District Sunday Football League.
Mr Johnson was allowed home for a fortnight by the Spanish authorities, having previously been unable to leave Tenerife since he was arrested for allegedly fatally stabbing a 25-year-old Moroccan, in the resort of Playa de las Americas.
"My stomach has been churning for the last three days with worry about whether it would happen," he told the Echo.
Mr Johnson's first stop before returning to the family home of 27 years at Elvet Green, Hetton, was to visit his mum Nora, 77, in Haswell Plough, who has not seen him since January last year.
"She saw him and just broke into tears and cried her heart out," said Mr Johnson's wife Joan, 53.
As well as catching up with their children Michelle, 27, Lorraine, 26, and Gary, 24, Mr Johnson is hoping to see his one-year-old granddaughter – who he has only seen once since his arrest.
He intends to spend his fortnight enjoying a quiet time at home, adding: "I'm just going be with my family and sort things out with the business.
"I would like to go and watch Sunderland, but I'll probably go and watch the local teams, like Hetton Lyons."
The incident which turned a holiday into a nightmare is believed to have happened when Mr Johnson acted as a good Samaritan to stop a fight, during which he suffered a head wound.
It is thought he could be held on bail in Tenerife for up to four years, but recent legal moves suggest a jury trial could take place in Santa Cruz next year.
The trauma has had a devastating effect on Mr Johnson and his loved ones, who have been wracked with worry about him.
"When this all first happened I was suicidal," he said. "I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep. Everything was just a daze. I couldn't believe what was happening.
"My life has been on hold until this goes to court. The emotional and physical stress and strain has been unbelievable."
He said he would have not been able to cope with the ordeal without help from friends who have stuck by him in Tenerife and Wearside, including entrepreneur Matty Roseberry.
A webpage called Bring Back Stepy has been set up on the Internet site Facebook, which urges people to contact North East MEP Stephen Hughes to lobby the Foreign Office for help.
A man from Liverpool was also arrested by Spanish Police in connection with the killing, and remanded in prison.

FRANK PATTISON: 25 YEARS AS PRESIDENT OF DURHAM COUNTY FA
On 29 February 1984 Frank Pattison was appointed as President of the Durham County Football Association following the decision of Arthur Askew to retire from the position. At the time of his appointment the Association was based in small offices in Durham and had limited assets. Frank has overseen the development of the Association to such an extent that on 18 February 2005 it was necessary to move to a custom built office block at the Riverside, Chester le Street. Currently the Association has assets in excess of £1.8 million and is one of the most successful and respected Counties in the country. From 1989 until 2003 Frank represented the County on The FA Council and he was elected a member of the main FA Board of Directors and later as Vice Chairman of The FA. He was also responsible for the creation of the National Game Board ( the body responsible for all football outside the Premier and Football Leagues) and was its first Chairman. Frank was and still is highly respected by many FA Councillors who believed that one day he would take over as Chairman of The FA. During the period of his office the Association has benefited from Frank’s experience as a Solicitor both in disciplinary and legal matters none more so than when his advice and guidance assisted the Association in becoming a Limited Company in September, 2001. Frank has always been anxious to support Youth football in the County and it is no coincidence that during his term of office Durham have won The FA County Youth Cup on four occasions and contested the final on two further occasions, a record unequalled by any other County. After 25 years Frank’s enthusiasm remains undiminished and apart from chairing all Directors and Council meetings he is a regular attendee at all Youth teamfixtures and County Cup Finals as well as local football matches.

FA Charter Standard criteria changes
The criteria for The FA Charter Standard Club programme has been slightly modified to reflect
the views of over 37,000 people who were consulted on the development of The FA’s National
Game Strategy 2008-12. Many of the changes also replicate examples of good practice that
have been implemented by FA Charter Standard clubs and as a result The FA’s Charter Standard
Club programme is further raising standards ad supporting the needs of grassroots football. From July 2009 all new clubs will have to adhere to the new criteria together with those existing FA Charter Standard Clubs renewing their status in season 2009-10. However for existing FA Charter Standard clubs a transitional
period has been allowed to provide sufficient time and support. Following the Goals and Enablers of The FA National Game Strategy the additions made to the criteria are as follows:
Goal 1: Growth and retention
• Clubs to have a link with a local school, FE college or university to recruit new players.
Goal 2: Raising standards
• First Aid equipment to be present on match days and training sessions.
• Clubs to implement the Respect programme codes of conduct.

Pre season Friendly Sacriston Cicket Club 6-1 Thornley
Well the first friendly of our pre-season could be described only really as a decent run out. The fixture was put together at the last minute and was organised the night before the game.
We had originally organised to play away to Ashington but for whatever reason they decided to cancel the game. This lead to our manager having to frantically try and find a new opponent for us to play.
We started the game slowly which was to be expected as the preparation in the lead up to the game was pretty shocking but kind of expected and understandable what with it being such a last minute re-arranged game. They went ahead after 6 minutes with there centre forward scoring from a corner with a decent header, he was left unmarked however. It took us awhile to get our passing game together but when we did it was pretty easy to break down the opposition from Sunderland. Our wing backs started to get forward more often and it was John Robson who supplied the cross for Yates who chested the ball down and he struck the ball in the bottom corner to make it 1-1 after 14 minutes. Good play from Gary Draper who drove through there defence and then tried to place the ball past the keeper, it was drifting wide but Yates followed in and had an easy tap in for the second. It was very good play from G. Draper again for the third. A good through ball from Colly and Draper was away. He burst through there defence again to get clear and was aided by a lucky deflection from there keeper from his attempted finish but he gathered the rebound and put it away. Fourth goal came from a corner. G.Draper passed it straight to Fenton who looked up asif to cross the ball into the box but deliberately curled the ball into the roof of the net. A good finish.
Fifth goal was a good quick break with a ball shifted up front and Kev Coates won a header to put Yates through who finished with a curling shot into the net from outside of the box.
The best goal of the day came from the mecurial Kristian Coils. A pass through from R. Draper and Coils took a quick look up to see the keeper off his line and with a brilliant lofted finished chipped the keeper from outside the box. Quality.
Both sets of lads stayed for a few drinks in the club afterwards which was good to see and lets hope this good win leads to a good season for us.
Goal summary:
14 min - Chris Yates (8/10) John Robson supplied the cross, and Chris Yates found the net from just inside the box with a tremendous right footed effort.
16 min - Chris Yates (6/10) A textbook right footed finish from six yards out by Chris Yates, following a goalmouth scramble. Gary Draper claimed an assist.
39 min - Gary Draper (7/10) Andrew Collinson supplied the through-ball, and Gary Draper found the net from just inside the box with a well-finished right footed effort.
53 min - Stuart Fenton (8/10) A well delivered corner from Gary Draper was converted by Stuart Fenton. A first-class finish with the right foot from long range.
55 min - Chris Yates (8/10) Chris Yates fired home from long range with a tremendous right foot goal, following a through-ball from Kevin Coates.
75 min - Kristian Coils (9/10) A spectacular individual goal and a moment of magic! Good lead up play from Rob Draper led to Kristian Coils scoring from long range with the right foot.

Goalkeeper Darren Devlin has signed for the club for this coming season, loads of experience and a personality that will enable him to fit right in with the rest of the lads
Bobby Rowland Trophy
The 2009 Bobby Rowland Trophy has been provisionally arranged, and sees the return of both Langley Park WMC and Hamsteels Inn FC. The fixtures for the event are as follows:
Pre Season Friendly
High Handenhold Bird Inn 5-4 Washington Colliery fc
Good effort for last pre-season game before new season starts next week.
Changes were made in defence after Wayne, Mouldy and Andy didn't turn up which meant we had to play two make shift full backs in John and Gezza but played well seems as though they both normally play in midfield.
Game started off with us on the back foot and opposition took the lead after 10 minutes following counter attack leaving us caught at the back. We then responed a few minutes later when Beano scored the equaliser with well taking shot inside the box.
Second half started off well with us taking the lead after 5 minutes, when a ball played through by Wallis set Beano up for his second. Unfortunately this didn't last long when a few minutes later their number 11 cut inside and fired from outside the box beating Tom to the top corner. 15 minutes later changes were made and two new lads Stewart and Ryan were brought on in place of Gezza and Doc. This proved to show a little inexperience down the right hand side, when High Hadenhold Bird Inn scored 3 goals in the space of 15 minutes making us go down to 5-2. Although this happened we did play well to get back into it when two balls over the top helped Beano grab his third and fourth goal of the game but he could've easily had another two.
Overall I thought this was a good experience for what we will be playing against this season, and a lot of positives can be taken from this friendly. Dale Reid - Assistant player manager
Goal summary:
15 min - Craig Neal (6/10) A flurry of activity in the area led to a goalmouth scramble. Craig Neal took advantage by scoring a clinical right footed goal from close range.
50 min - Craig Neal (7/10) A well delivered through-ball from Mark Wallis was converted by Craig Neal. A great finish with the right foot from 18 yards out.
80 min - Craig Neal (7/10) A well-finished individual goal and a moment of inspiration! Good lead up play led to Craig Neal going on a solo run, and scoring a right footed goal from long range yards.
85 min - Craig Neal (7/10) A well-finished individual goal and a moment of inspiration! Good lead up play led to Craig Neal going on a solo run, and scoring a right footed goal from 18 yards out yards.
Former Pelton Roab Player Signs On Loan for Gateshead Fc.
GATESHEAD expect to boost their firepower for the forthcoming Blue Square Premier campaign with the six-month loan signing of Hartlepool United striker Michael Mackay. The Tynesiders have struggled to replace Conference North Golden Boot winner Lee Novak this summer, missing out on several targets. However, Steven Richardson was snared early on - and former Ireland Under-19 international Darren Forsyth was signed last week.Mackay, who has made 25 starts and 35 appearances off the bench for Pools, will now fill the fourth striking birth and will remain at Gateshead until January 31.There is no clawback clause, so the pacy Mackay will play exclusively for Gateshead - having been a prolific scorer at non-league level before joining Hartlepool in February 2007.Mackay has a good track record at Pelton Roab , Birtley Town, Durham City and Consett - and Gateshead boss Ian Bogie believes the Durham-born player will prove to be an astute capture.
Want to be a Winner
Want to be a winner? Forget the song because blue is not the colour. Red cards may spell disaster in football, but red kit is a different matter entirely. A study has found that teams in red are more successful than those whose home shirts are yellow, white or blue.
Research by scientists at Durham and Plymouth universities, published in the Journal of Sports Sciences, claims that deep-seated biological responses to colours affect teams' performances. English league results since the Second World War were analysed, looking at how teams did when they were at home, therefore wearing their first-choice shirts. It was found that, of the top 68 sides, teams wearing red won more often at home, while sides in yellow or orange had the worst records. In away games, when teams tend to wear a variety of colours over the years, there was no difference in performance. Research also suggests that Olympic competitors wearing red are also more likely to enjoy success. In nature, red is often associated with male aggression and display, suggesting high levels of testosterone. Male mandrills, for example, have red coloration on their faces, rumps and genitalia that they use to communicate their fighting ability to other males. So teams in red will subconsciously feel tougher, as well as intimidating the opposition.
“We see a couple of possible explanations,” Professor Robert Barton, of Durham University, said. “Firstly, over time supporters may have been subconsciously more attracted to a club wearing red, so the club has developed an increasing resource base within its community. “Secondly, there may be a positive psychological boost from wearing red, or being associated with a red team, that is reflected on the field of play. Competing against a team in red could also impair performance.”
Three of the Barclays Premier League's top four - and the three most successful teams in English football - Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool, wear red. So do Bristol City and Stoke City, at the top of the Coca-Cola Championship, although teams in white are prevalent at the head of the Football League's bottom two divisions.
Over the years, there is no doubt that the red halves of Manchester, Bristol, Nottingham and Stoke - and the claret-and-blue part of Birmingham, for that matter - have outdone their city rivals. Not that Nottingham Forest fans, with their team presently in League One, would have much truck with the notion that their historical success was down to their choice of kit rather than the managerial genius of Brian Clough. However, Sir Alex Ferguson would concur that kit colour is significant. In 1996, the United manager blamed his team's grey away kit for a 3-0 half-time deficit against Southampton. “The players couldn't pick each other out,” he said. The side switched to white tops at the break, lost 3-1 and the kit was consigned to history. Being unable to see each other is not an excuse that Chelsea's players can use when they are wearing their present luminous yellow change strip.
The researchers concede that the financial acumen of the likes of Roman Abramovich is more than adequate compensation for the disadvantage of Chelsea's blue kit. Dr Russell Hill, also from Durham University, said: “It is certainly true that the influx of wealthy foreign owners has changed the resources available to some teams and this should result in increased success, regardless of their shirt colour. “Nevertheless, in close matches where teams are evenly balanced, we still predict that wearing red could tip the balance between success and failure and the red advantage will still persist.”
Groves Looks For Real Buzz
Spennymoor’s new chairman Brad Groves says that he wants to create a real “buzz” in the town following his appointment. Groves, who has masterminded the growth of Sunday League side Hetton Lyons into one of the top Sunday sides in the country, said that he jumped at the chance to be involved with Moors after he was offered the opportunity by vice chairman Alan Courtney and committee members Phil Gallagher and Billy Beasley two months ago. “Several clubs have approached me to become involved with them in the past, but because of my business, I’ve never really had the time,” he told The Northern Echo.
“But what impressed me most about Spennymoor was the enthusiasm and commitment of the people at the club, and how passionate the supporters are. Spennymoor has a great footballing heritage and a great track record, and there is a strong fan base. I want to help get the buzz back into the town.” Groves helped Moors financially last season when they were struggling. “I funded their away trip to Bideford in the FA Vase, for example. “But one thing I have emphasised is that the club must be self financing eventually. I’m happy to put funds into the club for the first year for the transition period, but after that, the club has to be self sufficient. But Spennymoor are one of the few clubs that can be very strong and have good gates. “We’re aiming for a squad of 23 players, so then we have cover in all positions. We’ve got to have strength in depth if we’re trying to win the league and cup competitions.”

Hetton Lyons Cricket Club Manager Moves into Saturday Football
a Club Statement from Spennymoor United web site
Company Director Billy Beasley has released the following statement on Wednesday 3rd June 2009: “Following a number of meetings over the close season I am absolutely delighted to confirm that Brad Groves has accepted the position as Chairman of Spennymoor Football Club. More details will follow however in a nutshell he is the man who has managed and financed Hetton Lyons for the past 11 or so seasons, building the club from scratch, instilling everyone around him with his own professional winning mentality and bringing home over that period 40+ trophies including the All England, raising the profile of the village to the national stage. Brad is a football man through and through and has followed the fortunes of our own football club whilst keeping a low profile, however toward the end of last season he stepped in to assist us with finance whilst insisting that he receive neither publicity nor reward. Allegedly, over the close season a number of major clubs in the Northern League plus clubs much further up the ladder, one of which has a beautiful cathedral, approached Brad for obvious reasons, and his default reply was always, "If I were ever to have an involvement with Saturday football, the only club that I would consider would be SPENNYMOOR".
Brad Replies:
''I personally cannot tell you how pleased that my fellow directors and myself are with this development and looking forward to the coming season. It is a measure of the respect and standing that Brad has within football that first class players such as the recent signings and those which are yet to be announced, are coming to our club. Having secured the above, Alan and myself are now putting together a commercial team with the objective of building upon what we have and kicking on. The hard work is never over. Much much more is happening so please keep in touch with the club through any means as there is a task for everyone.
We now, as a football club have a sound boardroom structure, a fantastic committee, two of the best young manager/coaches in local football, and a team capable of sustaining a real challenge for all of the major trophies.
All that we ask of the supporters is that you believe as we do and that you do, what you do better than any other club, and that is, turn up in droves, be vocal, be proud and enjoy the ride.''

Brandon United Sunday Possible Merger.
Brandon United Sunday have really struggled this season in regards to fielding a team. Several lads have left due to work and more are on there way. They have also been told by Brandon that we might not be able to use the pitch next season (which may be a blessing as it is absolutely terrible) but this has not been confirmed. What they are asking you is, do you know of any other teams struggling for players and we could possible merge? If not i think we may have to drop out of the league which is the last thing 7 or 8 of us want. Any help would be a bonus as i know we have to have next seasons forms into you next week.

In the First Division Lumley FC travelled to Brandon Sports & made it 6 games without defeat with a fine 3-0 victory. Lumley's Richard Ward broke the dead lock just before half time. In the 2nd half Lumley added their 2nd again though Ward, who was later, carried off. Washington JFC entertained visitors Pelton FC in a Second Division league match, the match was very close with a 0-0 score line at halftime, the visitors out shining the home team in the first half however Pelton goalkeeper pulled off two fantastic saves from Clarke and Vincent. The second half started with Washington Jfc starting to take control of the game in the centre of the park, Pelton Keeper made another great save from Middlemiss, Peltons centre forward Yippie just missed with a great header for the visitors, soon after that Clarke put the home team ahead when he chipped the ball over the centre half’s head and volleyed into the net, this was followed by a fortunate 2nd goal for Washington JFC when Middlemiss miss-truck a shot and the keeper let it go under his body, a very close game with the home team relived to have won. Chester Plough Inn were 1-0 winners at Brandon United,Hilda Park and visitors Durham Bede Lodge shared the Points in a 1-1 draw
In the Third Divison You might of thought that this was a cup final listening to the reactions throughout the game of the Washington Nissan manager and the Nissan players as they travelled to play Pelaw Grange Dogs.. Pelaws forwards Russell Fowler, Chris Hawkins and Kevin Turnes feeling the brunt of some heavy tackling and thus Nissan paid the price in the 20th minute when Kevin Turnes scored from a free kick, after Chris Hawkins had been brought down just on the corner of the penalty box Kevin beat the wall to slot a well placed ball into the corner of the goal to give Pelaw the lead. The game was closely balanced but a good move passed the Pelaws left back Phil Hawkins saw Craig Eccleston of Nissan put the ball passed Pelaw's keeper Scott Patterson. the score remained at 1-1 at half time and well into the second half with both Pelaw and Nissan having chances to go in front. Nissan would of but a great save from Scott Patterson then saw Pelaw attack the other end without avail. Pelaw thought they had a won penalty when referee Bill Grimes played the advantage when Chris Hawkins was first fouled then went into the box and looked as if he was going for goal when he was brought down but the whistle was for a free kick for the original foul.It was a free kick late into the game though that decided the match with Neil O'Neill getting the winner after squeezing past Peal's central defenders.
Washington Duke of Albany hosted Witton Gilbert Glendenning Arms in this Fourth Division clash. The visitors turned up with only 9 men and as a consequence the game was a one sided affair with the home team having a two man advantage. They eventually ran out 15 - 0 winners, the goals coming from Andrew Cameron (3), Jamie Sheriff (3), Mark Liddle (2), Colin Cowen (2), Ryan Mason (2), Steven Douglas, Craig Cruickshank and an O.G.

League News - Sunday 22nd Mar 2009
In the 2nd Round of the Lasertech Trophy Third division club Nissan Sports Club were the visitors to Glebe Park to take on Premier Division strugglers Washington Arms. Nissan started strongly with lively forward Neil Davison twice bringing out the best from Arms keeper Michael Ramsey to deny them the lead. On the fifteen minute mark some sloppy Arms defending let in Andrew McIntyre to fire Nissan into the lead. The Arms response was immediate and in a ten minute spell storm into the lead with goals from, Jonathan Harrop, David Lyall and Danny Murray. In the final minute of the half David Lyall finishes off a great move to powerfully head home his second of the game. In the second half with the strong wind behind them Nissan push forward in an attempt to get back into the game however a second goal for Danny Murray and the goal of the game from Vinny Moran mid way through the half ensures the Arms progress through to the quarter finals with a comfortable 6-1 victory. In the same Competition but in the quarter Finals Ushaw Moor Cricket Club beat visitors Sedgefield Crosshills 2-1 and Washington JFC beat Burnmoor Cricket Club 5-2
In the Premier Division Leaders Kelloe WMC FC travelled to Langley Park and started brightly passing the ball well against a strong wind and on a bumpy pitch. After a couple of half chances, Kelloe were caught on the break when a long ball forward was well finished by Craig Coates to give the home side a 1 - 0 lead at half time. Kicking with the strong wind in the second half, Kelloe continued to have lots of possession but failed to score until the 75th minute when Neil Charlton crossed for John Jury to volley home from 12 yards out. Kelloe then pressed forward but missed many chances until again; Neil Charlton dribbled well and crossed for midfielder Gary Turton to tap home from 2 yards out. Final score 2 -1 to Kelloe WMC FC.Newton Aycliffe Wmc beat visitors Fatfield Biddick Inn 5-1 Pelton ROAB earned l a very hard 3 pts, against visitors Burnside Wmc. After a very poor first 25 mins Pelton then created 3 clear cut chances yet went in at Half time with the score 1-1 Thanks to a Goal from Luke Kerry, 2nd half a combination of poor finishing and bad luck kept it 1-1 with only 5 Mins remaining Two Goals the second from Kerry in the 86 min and one from Paul Freeman in the 87 Min gave Pelton the Three Points.
In Division 1 Lumley Fc played out a 3-3 draw despite dominating the 1st half & leading 2-0, through Richard Ward & an OG. At 2-1 Steven Roughley converted a penalty to make it 3-1 but brave Esh Winning Cricket Club Scored twice late on to pinch a point. Houghton Mill All-stars beat Waterhouses 2-1 in blustery windy conditions. There were no goals in a tight first half. Mill took the lead on fifty minutes when David Hall blasted a free kick from twenty yards out into the roof of the net. Ten minutes later substitute Gavin Bell equalised for Waterhouses. Mill were awarded a penalty kick on seventy five minutes when Andy Adey was held in the goal area. Steve Fenn neatly placed the spot kick to the side of keeper Chris Burr to give Mill a valuable three points.Sacriston Cricket Club were 4-1 winners at Brandon Unt, Chilton Wmc and visitors Birtley Black Horse shared the Points in a 2-2 Draw.
In the Second Division Washington Lambton Village earned a share of the Points in a 2-2 draw at Bishop Middle ham Cross Keys, Pelton Fc were 2-0 winners at Brandon United (Sunday), Chester Osborne and Visitors Pittington Fc shared the points in a 3-3 draw.
In the Third Division Goals Washington Colliery Travelled to Cassop Victoria and Goals from. John Kelly took advantage by scoring a clinical right footed goal from 18 yards out in the 70 Min and Barry Lamb in the 80 Min was not enough as they were beaten 3-2.AFC Newton Hall were 4-2 Home winners over Bowburn Cooperage
In the Fourth Division Langley Park Sports and social Travelled to Witton Gilbert Wmc Goals from 76 min Tony Rutter A surging run from Kennard and the ball eventually falling to Rutter who scored with a turn on the penalty spot, Then in the 80 min Stephen Cummings curled a tremendous effort into the top corner from outside the box and in the 87 min Tony Rutter who latched on to a fumbled catch by the goalkeeper to make the score 3-3 and a share of the points. Washington Duke of Albany made the long trip to Ferryhill, to take on the Surtees, the Albany were without the services of Lee Munro, Michael Burns and Steven Douglas due to injury, plus Lee Bradburn and the recently departed Ritchie Lowthian.. Kicking up the hill in the 1st half we went out with the intention of keeping things tight in the 45 then use the slope and wind to our advantage in the second half. In the opening 5 or 10 minutes it looked as though we would spend the half defending and when Ferryhill took the lead we knew we had a game on our hands. Following the goal the response was tremendous, as we piled the pressure on the home side for the next 30 minutes. Mickey Dowson was having a lot of joy down the right hand side and he floated in a couple of excellent balls for Jamie Sheriff who on two occasions missed from close range, one chance seemed a certain goal but he headed over the bar from 4 or 5 yards. Steven Talbot also looked to have scored only for the home keeper to pull off an excellent save low at his near post. Given that we were kicking up the steep hill for the first 45 minutes our overall performance was very good, back to the form of the last few months barring the last two games. We came off at half time still 1-0 down but the overall mood was positive. We knew we could capitalise on our better play in the second half. I hoped the second half would be good but did not expect it to go as well as it did, as we went on to completely dominate the game and score 7 goals. After a sustained period of pressure our breakthrough came from a penalty, the Ferryhill defender handling in his box. Mark Liddle stepped up and drilled into the corner to level the scores. After missing some golden opportunities in the first half, Jamie Sheriff made amends as he smashed into the top corner from 8 yards out to put the Duke 2-1 up. Ferryhill were rattled and as they lost their composure Andrew Cameron notched another goal to add to hit double figures for the season. Mark Liddle then capitalised from slack marking to receive the ball in the box and lob the onrushing keeper to put the game out of reach of the home team to make the score 4-1. Steven Talbot had been causing problems with his Rory Delap style throw ins, but it was a mis-thrown effort that he eventually received an assist from, with Mickey Dowson helping it towards goal, the keeper made a bit of a mess of it as it squirmed under his body for 5-1. Next we saw the goal of the game, the impressive Mark Liddle completing his hat-trick as he rifled into the top corner from outside the area. Jamie Sheriff thought he had his second of the game but the keeper pulled off another good save, however, the loose ball fell into the path of sub Stewart Conlon who finished well to make the score 7-1.
Neville’s Cross Social were 3-2 Home winners over Shad forth Plough Inn, While Framwellgate Moor Wmc Crashed to a 2-0 away defeat at Kelloe Davy Lamp. Washington Usworth Top Club were 6-2 winners at Bowburn Crowtrees.

The pitch had dried out almost completely which meant the ball bounced horribly off the cut up surface all day. The home side were expecting a tough time after being forced into making a host of changes from the previous weeks game, but they deservedly took the lead in a fairly one sided first half, Andrew Cameron rising highest to head home from a corner. In the second half the game was a more even affair with the away team now looking the better of the two teams, they got a deserved equaliser, albeit fortunately after a mix up between defender and goalkeeper let in Dale Aunger to tap into an empty net. Michael Dowson should have won it for the Duke of Albany but he sent his header wide from 6 yards with the last meaningful action of the game.Sedgefield Crosshills and visitors Kelloe Davy Lamp shared the Points in a 1-1 draw, Langley Park Sports and Social were 3-1 Home winners over Quarrington Hill wmc,Shadforth Plough Inn travelled to Witton Gilbert to play the Glendenning Arms , it was the away side who opened the scoring with Jack Moore fired home from long range with a spectacular right foot goal, following a through-ball from Graeme Coxon,Joe Simpson added the second for Shadforth on 8 mins to put Shadforth 2-0 Just before Half time Joe Simpson added his second after A well delivered through-ball from Graeme Coxon .The Glenn responded with two quick goals to make the Half time score 3-2 to Shadforth. League News - Sunday 15th Mar 2009
The prestigious Durham County Cup Final will be played between Boldon Shack and Hetton Lyons C.C. the last spot was clinched on Sunday as the holders swept aside the Hartlepool side and did it playing over 80mins with just 10 men. The Lyons were reduced to 10 men after 8 mins Daniel Moore's tackle was judged to be worthy of a straight red by referee Stockbridge, the loss of Moore seemed to strengthen the Lyons after the visitors started well, but Lyons keeper Keith Finch was rarely troubled, Hetton took the lead on 14mins Jamie Clarke ran onto an Ainsley through ball to score at the 2nd attempt past the keeper, with Ainsley dominating the middle of the park Hetton soon doubled their tally Clarke again the scorer with a neat finish, it seemed to knock the wind out of the Manor as they struggled to break down the Lyons backline of Ryan,Liddle and Watson.
The second half was much the same as the first and midway through it Clarke completed his hat-trick turning in the box and hitting the back of the net from 8 yards, the Lyons were buoyed on with the return of their manager Bradley Groves, but he praised all the players on the pitch saying " it wasn’t a dirty game at all, I think Daniel's tackle was mistimed and didn’t deserve what he was given, the Manor are a good young side definitely one for the future if they all stay together" he added " man of the match for me was Jay Lloyd Ainsley he was outstanding as was Jamie Clarke, there wont be many boasting a hat-trick in a county cup semi-final".
Credit has to be given to both sides for a good game but experience showed over youth. Hetton Lyons will now proudly represent the Durham and District League in the County Cup Final against a Boldon side which boasts former Sunderland player Craig Russell in its squad. The date and venue have yet to be confirmed by the F.A.
Bishop Auckland heart foundation semi final pelton raob 2 kelloe wmc 1,pelton reached the final with a well deserved win over kelloe the first half didn't have many chances with starford making the only save of the first half for pelton and healer with a header which seemed easier to score than miss. the second half was much the same with both defences playing well then with 25 minutes to go a Ryan Drummond cross found Luke Kerry 8 yards out and he rifled into the back of the net 5 minutes later the ball landed at Gareth cornels feet and he slotted home kelloe pulled one back in the last minute this was a fair result and considering pelton had no fewer than 5 players missing.
Deerrness Driveways Presidents trophy Presidents Trophy 4th Round
Washington Duke of Albany hosted Chester Osborne WMC in this semi final encounter. The pitch was cut up almost everywhere which meant that the majority of the football on show was akin to the weather, miserable. Both teams struggled to control the ball and as such the game turned into a battle.
That said, both teams were still creating chances, the Duke of Albany were guilty of wasteful finishing and should have had three in the first half, Chester Osborne had an effort cleared off the line and forced the home keeper into a fantastic save with a shot from inside the area in an even 1st half. The scores were level at 0-0 going into half time.
As the second half played out, extra time looked inevitable with neither team creating clear cut chances, until a goal out of nothing for the Osborne put them 1-0 up, a cross from the left missed everyone and rolled into the corner of the net. This seemed to spur the home side into action, but they went on to miss 5 guilt edge chances that seemed easier to score than miss. Despite the Duke of Albany creating the more clear cut chances in the second half, the game was still very evenly contested elsewhere on the pitch. A draw would have been a fair result on the basis of the 90 minutes but it was the Osborne who were happiest to hear the whistle of referee Steve Bulmer, and will now progress to the final of the competition.
In the Lasertech Knockout Cup 3rd round Pelaw Grange Dogs Fc welcomed 1st Div side Lumley FC in what turned out to be an entertaining game. the teams seemed evenly matched and it took a deflected goal 10 minutes into the second half for Lumley to score. Despite both teams efforts both goalkeepers had little to do and the score remained 1-0 to Lumley at the finish.
Premier Division Goals, the first five minutes from kick off, the second five minutes before the final whistle saw Sedgefield St. Edmunds return to winning ways against premier division bottom club Washington Arms. In between the goals both sides produced some good football, Sedgefield’s lively attackers being well marshalled by the Arms defenders, but the Arms lack of finishing power ensured Sedgefield comfortably maintained their lead to take home the three points
In Division One Houghton Mill All Stars were 2-1 winners against EshWinning CC.After twenty minutes Mill's David Jane crossed from the left wing to David Hall who delightfully lobbed the Esh 'keeper Jamie Robinson only to see the ball hit the upright. Luckily for Mill Gary Adey was on standby to slot in the rebound.Esh equalised ten minutes into the second half when a strong wind carried Brian Gott's cross over the head of Mill 'keeper Dan Pearson into the top corner of the net. The winning goal was on seventy minutes when man of the match David Hall lobbed the ball over the Esh keeper's head for the second time but on this occasion the ball sailed into the back of the net.
This was always going to be a day of mixed emotions as the lads were coming off the back of two defeats and Sherburn defeated us earlier in the season (August) 4 – 3 after a very tight game. Sherburn are not only topping the league at the present time but they have scored over 50 goals in the games they have played to date. The day ended up in Steelers favour with a 4-1 win away from home but the most enjoyable part was the way the lads mobbed Michael Quinn after he had scored the fourth goal. The home side may have thought that we were showing a little disrespect in the way the lads celebrated but it wasn’t intended. Michael Quinn has played around 50 games for the Steelers without scoring and the lad came on to play his penultimate game before going to the States on a coaching academy and he finally made his mark in Steelers history. With 2 minutes left on the clock, Michael picked the ball up and struck a 35 yard power driver over the top of the home keeper and into the back of the net.
The entire team wishes him all the best in his future adventure and hope that he returns as eager as ever to the Steelers outfit. We changed it around a bit today and went for a 3-5-2 formation with Stuart Dawson playing the wide right role. Not only did Stuart adapt to this change but the lad went on to make 3 goals and earn the managers, man of the match award. JC took the first of our four goals, picking up a loose ball from a Michael Nichol header and tucking the ball into the net. This goal levelled the scores after the home side went ahead 5 minutes into the second half, but now the game was on. Stuey Dawson made the first goal and then produced another bit of magic to get our second and put us in front for the first time in the game. Stuey delivered a peach of a ball that Michael Nichol netted into the back of the net with force to put us in the lead for the first time. Like so many of the team, this guy was back to his best and a lynch pin in all our moves but the man Broomy got the nod from the opposition as their man of the match.
Our third was another Dawser delivery that bowled their keeper over as he powered in a shot and the keeper got hands to the ball but the young wiz kid there was to pick the bits up and fire a left foot shot into the net. This gave us the breathing space we needed as the Lambton Arms were no mugs as they had lost only one game in 14 matches prior to this vital game for the Steelers. And this is when the mighty Quinn entered. His goal said everything about the way the Steelers played today and try to play every game.
Coming off the bench with minutes to go is difficult for any professional but the big fella signed off his Steelers involvement to date (but hopefully not the end) with a goal his parents would be proud of. The league leaders gave us a rough ride during this game as they have quite a bit of pace in their side but I have to say the lads did very well to overcome this strength. The move of the day was Hightower’s dummy to sell the centre forward on a pass back. He didn’t think he meant it! I thought it was excellent! The lads wondered! But the end result was smiling faces on all the lads’ dishes which are something that has been missing of late.
Big performances were had by all the side but special mention has to go to the skipper, Broomy, Micky Nic, JC, and Hogga but like every game, the end result is evaluated by the teams performance.Everyone played their part today to bring about this very important victory but the thing that pleased me the most is the way that every team member played their part in the securing this win to keep our season alive.
In the Fourth Division Framwellgate moor wmc v Neville’s cross Good win for fram 6-4 the win was due to hard work Goals after 17mins from Andrew Jaques after 25mins Paul Gibson 43mins Liam Wrightson standing at 3-0 half time .Neville’s cross came back second half to make it 3-3 Then Andrew Jacques stroke a great hat trick in the 73rd min 78th min 85th min to give us a 6-3 lead then Neville’s cross got a late goal back to make it 6-4 Andrew Jacques hat trick was scored within 15mins scoring a total of 4 goals in the game
Hetton Lyons Cricket Club to stay
After the game, Coundon Cons appealed to the Durham County Football Association. The reason for the appeal was that they were not happy with Hettons winning goal. Coundon Claim that the Goal was Offside.
During the game the Referee was injured and Linesman Mark Moore took over the Middle. As they did not have a Linesman, Hetton could supply one but Coundon could not, so both Clubs agreed to Hetton’s Linesman. The appeal was based on the fact that the Hetton Linesman did not flag for offside when Hetton scored the winner.
The appeal was heard at D.F.A. during the week and they ruled that the tie should take place again. Hetton were not happy with this and resigned from all Football immediately. The League Issued the following statement to the Sunderland Echo:
The League would be very sad to lose a team of the quality of Hetton Lyons Cricket Club. Their Manager Brad Groves and Secretary Dave Lietch are two of the nicest people you could meet in Local Football. Thier exploits in the last Four Seasons winning the FA Sunday Cup, Winning The Durham County Football Association Sunday Cup winning the League and Various League Cups. The quality of players the Lyons were able to attract to the Club has all helped to make the Durham Sunday Football League into one of the Strongest Sunday Football Leagues in the country. Local Sunday League Football will also miss the Lyons as other Clubs in the area have aspired to the Heights that Hetton have done in winning the FA Sunday Cup. As a League, and I speak for local Grassroots Football, they will be sadly missed. I can only hope that they reconsider and at least play out the remainder of the season and then make a descion on their Future.
Graham Lilley
After various meetings, the players at Hetton decided to play the game against Coundon Cons and continue in the League until the end of the Season.

Hetton Crash Out In Nottingham
In the F.A. Carlsberg Sunday Cup 4th Round Hetton Lyons Cricket Club Travelled to Nottingham to take on the Scots Greys. The holders, Hetton Lyons, crashed out of the national trophy at Nottingham, they failed to produce the kind of form that brought them to Anfield last year, the Lyons failed to score for the first time this season and a poor performance from a strong side saw their dream of a return to merseyside slip away, the only goal of the game came early in the first half and Hetton never recovered from it or the slow start, A Johnston free kick in the first half and a Craig Ruddy shot in the second was the closest Hetton came to equalising, Finch pulled off two or three saves to keep Hetton in the game but they remained frustrated and resigned to a long trip home with no reward, Lyons Secretary David Leitch said " we didnt perform at the level we know we could and now were out, i have to take some of the blame as the preperation wasnt right with some of the players, we have to pick ourselves up for next week" Lyons next task is County Cup tie away at a rejuvinated Houghton Glendale
Houghton Mill All Stars went through to the JD Taxi's Cup Semi Finals after beating a stubborn Gilesgate Moor Hotel 4-3 in an exciting round three encounter. In wet and blustery conditions the only goal of the first half was after four minutes when an inswinging Steven Ashman corner kick deceivedeveryone to land in the corner of the net. Early in the second half Gilesgate 'keeper James Winter made a great save from Mill's David Hall only for Gary Adey to tap in the rebound. Gilesgate pulled a goal back on the hour mark when Andrew Hart headed home from close range and this spurred Gilesgate to press for the equaliser but some resolute defending from the Mill defence kept them at bay.An enthralling final fifteen minutes produced four goals. Mill's Gary Adey rounded the 'keeper for 3-1 and Kevin Johnston made it four firing in off the post. Gilesgate hit back through Paul West and a Robert Cooper header for 4-3. Mill 'keeper Dan Pearson made a terrific save in the dying moments to prevent the game going into extra time.
Washington Duke of Albany faced Pelaw Grange Dogs in the 3rd round of the Deerness Driveways Presidents Trophy. The game was played on a boggy surface, and it was the Duke of Albany who seemed to be coping with it marginally better, they took the lead after 15 minutes, Steven Douglas setting up Lee Munro to slot past Pelaw keeper Craig Baines. Pelaw were threatening going forward, and deservedly drew level only a couple of minutes after the Duke's opener, Chris Hawkins springing the offside trap and lobbing the onrushing keeper. Parity lasted only a few minutes though, as Steven Talbot picked out Mark Liddle at the back post who volleyed the ball home to put the Duke 2 - 1 up. The lead was increased after Graham Fullarton smashed a superb 35 yard free kick into the top corner, giving Baines no chance in the Pelaw goal. Pelaw almost got back into the game in the opening minutes of the second half, Kevin Turnes hitting the post with an effort from just inside the area. Duke substitute Stewart Conlon put the game out of reach of the visitors though, climbing highest to head home a corner to make the score 4 - 1. Jamie Sherriff scored two identical goals, both again from corners, with him scrambling the ball over the line. Man of the Match Mark Liddle rounded off a fine performance finishing neatly past Baines following a superb through ball from Stuart Sweeney to give the Duke of Albany a 7 - 1 win and a place in the semi finals of the competition.

Hetton got two goals back before half time. In the second half Sedgefield took wind advantage and a further four goals from Andrew Beamson and a hat trick from Martin Lower secured a place for St Edmunds in the next round. Pelton Roab finally got agame played after an abandonment and postponements, putting in a very good performance to defeat a very talented Quebec Steelers side. Pelton started strongly from the kick off winning headers and some superb strong tackles, Tony Healer gave us the lead after 32 minutes with a brilliant run and finish brushing off the defender and slotting home, this was after the away keeper made to great saves. After the break wPelton went futher ahead on 67 mins when Micheal Graver delivered a well flighted ball which decieved the keeper and went in off the bar. Credit to Quebec though they hit back win the 70 min .Pelton hit back 14 mins left Pocket rocket Luke Kerry slotted home .This gave Pelton a 3-1 Home win.
In the Premier Division Kelloe Wmc Fc travelled to unbeaten Brandon Bay Horse and it was the visitors who started the brighter and took the lead with an own goal from a Lee Peachey free kick. Kelloe then missed chances to extend their lead and Brandon levelled and then soon after took the lead with a good finish from Andrew Johnson. Kelloe pressed for an equaliser and Gavin Barton scored with a deflected shot to make the game 2-2 at half time. After the interval Kelloe doinated the half but missed several good chances. They took the lead with a 25 yard shot from Stuart Thompson which was followed by another good finish from Gavin Barton. Staurt Thompson then grabbed his second with a solo run late on to make the final score 5 - 2 to Kelloe. Goal scorers for Brandon were Steven Graham and Andrew Johnson.

In the First Division Lumley Fc should Have Been Clear Winners by Half Time in the Home Game against Sedgefield Black Lion, But Only Led 1-0, Through a Richard Ward Strike, When They Entertained Sedgefield Black Lion. Sedgefield Began The 2nd Half Brightly & Soon Equalised. The Score Remained 1-1 for A Short Time before Ward Pounced For His 2nd & Restore A Lumley Lead. Lumley Continue To Miss A Host Of Chances & Were Punished By A Late Equaliser. The Game Finished 2-2
In the Second Division Quebec Steelers entertained Hetton Social to have any chance of this game going ahead the pitch was prepared the previous day by moving the mole hills to parts of the pitch that had the odd rut or three. At least Morris Miner, our resident mole was of some use during the festive period but there must be a whole team of miners by the amount of hills around the pitch. The referee inspected the pitch and both teams kicked off on what was a hard pitch but no different to a dry summers day surface apart from the air temperature. The playing surface was not a hazard to any player, with the only difficulty being the bounce of the ball.Hetton Social were sitting bottom of the division but we knew they would push us all the way as they had lost a lot of their games by the odd goal and hadn’t conceded too many in the process. They were also playing in the best colours in the land – Red & White stripes complete with the Sunderland crest. Several chances were put wide during the first half when little bobbles gave the ball a new flight but Stewart Dawson didn’t waste the opportunity to put the lads 1-0 up. Scoring in consecutive games, he capitalised on a defensive mistake on the half way line. Running towards the park end with only their goalie to beat, he shot early when he could have taken it further, but who was I to complain as it beat the away keeper and nestled in the back of the net after glancing in, off the left hand post. At the half way stage it was still 1-0 to the Steelers.
The visiting keeper Robert Mayo pulled off some remarkable saves during the second 45 but there was little he could do to stop us going 2 up. Craig Cairns went on a solo run and he danced around the visiting keeper as he came out to block him. Running at an empty goal we all thought he would put it in with his left foot but no, not Craig!!!!! Allowing the defender to get back and cover the near post he brought the ball calmly back onto his right foot and after what seemed an age he fired the ball home.
In the Fourth Division Washington Duke of Albany Travelled to Neville’s Cross take on Neville’s Cross social, who have a much improved record from last season. After a pitch inspection the referee declared the pitch playable .The game kicked off and early indications were that there would be very little passing football played. The opening exchanges were fairly even but it was the home team who opened the scoring, with their impressive number 4 breaking into the box and finishing neatly across the Hill Keeper Liam Sheriff to bury the ball into the bottom corner. The first half was poor from our point the Conditions not helping after a few words at half time the Duke went out for the second half determined to get back into the game ASAP. They started like a house on fire and Neville’s Cross struggled to get out of their half. Playing long balls. Jamie Sheriff profited from a punt out of defence from Andrew Cameron as he headed over the keeper and into the net. The Duke took the lead in slightly fortuitous fashion, Lee Munro shot from 30 yards and the ball took another one of those bounces, this time over the diving keeper. The Hill got a 3rd around ten minutes later, Ryan Mason drifting in a well placed corner for Andrew Cameron to rise and head home. The impressive Ryan Mason was getting more and more involved and was rewarded for his efforts as he broke through and fired past the keeper to make it 4-1. A lapse in concentration allowed Neville’s Cross to score to bring the score to 4-2 with ten minutes remaining. Almost immediately after, Lee Munro picked the ball up in his own half and beat three players as he burst into the box and smashed the ball into the top corner for the goal of the game to give a final score of 5-2 to the Duke of Albany.

In Division 1 Lumley Fc V Sacriston Cc Looked Bound To Be A Stalemate As Both Teams Cancelled Out Each Other & Struggled To Create Chances. But With Less Than 10 Minutes Remaining Lumley's Craig Elliott Was Controversially Judged To Of Handled In The Box, Robert Nixon Made No Mistake From The Spot & Gave Sacriston A 1-0 Lead Against The Run Of Play. Lumley Continued To Dominate Possession & Their Dominance Paid Off When, Mark Elliott Was Bundled Over In The Box & A Penalty Was Awarded, Which Steven Roughley Slotted Home For The Equaliser, the score 1-1, Brandon Sports were 8-1 Winners at Chilton Wmc.

In the Third Division another High scoring game saw East Rainton Travellers Rest win 8-2 against visitors AFC Newton Hall. Washington Colliery were 3-1 winners at Houghton Chilton Lodge.
In the 4th Division the Witton Gilbert Glen entertained Quarrington Hill Wmc An enthralling game was settled by the odd goal in seven to break the run of draws between these two sides. Glen started quickly and were pressurising from the off with wingers David Winter and Anil Dalani finding space on either flank. The opening goal came six minutes in from a neat move down the right. Dalani beat his marker, cut into the box and fired a low cross toward the near post which was spilled by the keeper and forced home by Winter four yards out. Glen were dominating the game and midfield pair Andrew Goodburn and David Wardle were pulling the strings in the middle of the park with Goodburn playing his usual hard working role and Wardle providing the creative spark with some excellent passing and movement going forward. The second goal came from the centre of the park. Liam Summers won a header deep in his own half and the loose ball was picked up by Goodburn who fed Paul Anderson on the edge of the centre circle and his through ball found the run of Ben Sanderson who kept his composure to round the keeper and roll the ball in left footed from 16 yards to make it 2-0 on 22 minutes. Glen continued to make chances and but for some good saves, a controversial offside and some wasteful finishing would have extended their advantage before half time.Glen didn't start the second half well and let Quarrington Hill back into the game after four minutes of the first half. Some indecision between Summers and Chris Wharton allowed Quarrington Hill's striker a clear shot on goal and one he didn’t waste, smashing the ball high past Andy Grant from 18 yards. The equaliser came six minutes later from another defensive mistake as both Summers and Aaron White had chances to clear but failed to do so and the ball was forced in from eight yards to level the match at 2-2. Glen hit back within 2 minutes to regain the lead. Again the ball was worked through midfield with Shaun Glendinning, Goodburn, Wardle and Dalani. Wardle and Dalani exchanged passes and Wardle fired a low cross toward the far post where he found Winter who controlled and stroked the ball home left footed for his second of the match. Quarrington Hill found a second equaliser around five minutes later when a missed interception left Grant exposed and he could do little to stop another good shot from 18 yards. The final goal of the game came on 75 minutes.
The ball was again worked through midfield and found Anderson on the left edge of the box. Some neat footwork took him clear of his marker who then clipped him to concede a penalty which Anderson tucked away comfortably to the goalkeeper's right. Glen made further chances and could have extended their lead but saw the game out to finally record a victory over a stubborn opponent and continue their good home form. Pelton Bird Inn entertained Neville’s Cross Social Club both teams started game well and the first goal came to the bird from the penalty spot after 15 mins. With an evenly matched first half Pelton ended the half only 1-0 to the good.Peltoon started second half well with another goal after 67 mins.for Striker Carl Ritchie only to find our selves conceded one 8 mins later by some careless defending to make it a nail biting finish until only a couple of mins. later Pelton were awarded a free kick about 35 yards out to the left hand side which Carl Ritchie took and rocketed in to the top left corner to complete his hatrick and win the game 3-1 the final score. Man of the match well deserved to Carl Ritchie.Shaforth Plough Inn were 4-3 winners at Framwellgate Moor Wmc. The Ferryhill Surtees were 3-1 winners at Kelloe Davy Lamp, and Washington Duke of Albany were 3-0 Home winners over Witton Gilbert Wmc
Pelaw Grange Dogs FC entertained Langley Park social Club FC in the Deerness Presidents Trophy Second Round, Although Pelaw looked the stronger team they had failed to score or have many shots on goal by half time. Langley had two lively forwards as did Pelaw and Langley's defence was doing well to make it nil all at half time
In the second half Pelaw didn't seem interested and allowed the visitors to take a 2 goal lead one from a set peace and another when Pelaw pushed up too high. It could have been more if it hadn't been for Scott Pattison in goal and some strong running back by David Donnelly to kick off the line and block a shot when Langley were clean through.
It wasn't until the last half hour of normal time that Pelaw started to show their class with a well taken goal by Neil Worley in a solo effort and then just before full time they managed to equalise via Chris Hawkins. The pitch was heavy and in the second half Langley lost their number 3 to injury and had to be replaced.Pelaw then showed their resilience with goals coming from Russell Fowler who had ran tirelessly all match, Chris Hawkins and Kevin Turnes who had seen several shots saved by an inform keeper for Langley. Chester Hilda Park were 4-1 Home winners over visitors Brandon United Sunday. In the First Round of this Competition Coxhoe Wmc were 6-2 winners at Hetton Social Club, and a Great solo effort from Michael Absom in the 89th Min Gave Ushaw Moor Cricket Club a very Hard earned win at Washington Usworth Top Club 1-0.
In the Alan Smith Memorial Trophy 3rd Round Gilesgate Moor Hotel were 4-0 winners at Bishop Middelham Cross Keys.
In the NTL Transport Trophy 1st Round Brandon Bay Horse were 5-2 winners at Birtley Board Inn and Waterhouses progressed to the next round with a Fine 4-1 Home win over Washington Nissan.

League News - Sunday 14th December
Houghton Mill All Stars' Steve Fenn notched four goals to send Mill, through to the next round of the NTL Transport League Cup 2nd Round in a, comfortable 5-0 home win against Nevilles Cross SC. David Hall set Fenn up for his first goal on fifteen minutes, Gary Adey, rounded the Nevilles Cross 'keeper ten minutes later and crossed for, Fenn to knock home his second., After fifty minutes a neat left wing run and cross by Steven Ashman, found Gary Adey at the far post who slammed in Mill's third.
Mill's fourth was the goal of the game which started with Kevin Johnston, collecting the ball just outside his own penalty area. Johnston ran the, entire length of the field beating three opposing players before passing, to Fenn who coolly bent the ball over the 'keeper into the corner of the net. Fenn netted his fourth and Mill's fifth five minutes from time. The game, was slightly marred towards the end when Mill 'keeper Dan Pearson was, accidentally kicked in the head when diving for the ball. With blood, pouring from his face Pearson was taken to hospital for treatment.Sacriston Wmc travelled to the Washington Duke of Albany and were 1-0 winners.
In TheAvec Durham Football Association County Cup Lumley Fc Entertained Former All England Champions Coundon Conservative Club. Although Coundon lead 1-0 trough a controversial 1st half goal, Lumley put in a brave, battling performance, but late goals made it a final score of 4-0 to Coundon.
In the FA Sunday Cup Hetton Lyons Cricket Clubs game at Dewsbury against Thornhill Lees for the premier Division of the Heavey Woollen Sunday Alliance Football League was Cancelled and has now been re arranged for next Sunday.
In the Premier Divison the only game played saw Ferryhill Wmc win 6-0 at Washington Arms Andrew Dixon 2, and one each for Kevin Hodgson,Chris Dixon, Sean Foster and Josh Gibson.
In the Third Divison Quebec Steelers were away to Chester Plough, and the downfall of snow overnight seemed to miss Chester, which was great. Steelers got off to a great start. Playing some great football, but didnt open the scoring till the 35th minute with Paul Broom cutting inside the 18 yard box and slotting it past the keeper.
Minutes later Broomy took the Steelers 2-0 up, and that is how the first half finished. Kicking off the second half Liam Bowes finally found the net after many missed chances in the first half. After that the goals seemed to roll in , with goals from Iain Race, Craig Cairns and two from Stuart Dawson. The home side didnt give in though and in a frenzied 10 minute attack they scored one back against the Steelers. Final score 7-1. A Game that had some amazing football on the day, matched by a fantastic performance by the referee; Mark Moore.
Goals from Stephen Adair 2 and one each for Jon Collings and Neil Cutmore were not enough as Cassop Victoria crashed 6-4 at East Rainton Travellers Rest
In the Fourth Divison A fantastic effort by Witton Gilbert Glenndenning Arms, management, chairman and players ensured this home game against Bowburn Crowtrees went ahead. After marking out lines in the snow with brushes and recieving the go-ahead from referee Chris Bramley this game got underway on a crisp winter morning and turned out to be a decent game. The Glen started much the better and were, as usual, playing some decent football despite the conditions. After a couple of early efforts which didn't really work the Bowburn goalkeeper Glen took the lead through Jonathan White on the break after twenty minutes. A Bowburn corner was headed out by Summers and picked up by Sanderson who fed White as he crossed the half-way line. Bowburn's offside appeals were waved away and White rounded David Robinson in the Bowburn goal to slot in from twelve yards. Bowburn seemed to wake up after conceding and scored two in ten minutes, both from John Guthrie, to turn the game on it's head. The first came from a defensive error by Andrew Fallon who sliced his clearance facing his own goal and the loose ball was rolled in from 15 yards. The second Bowburn goal came around eight minutes later. The ball was picked up in midfield and worked forward to Guthrie who, after evading three challenges, bent the ball beyond Andy Grant in the Glen goal to put Bowburn 2-1 ahead with a fine finish. The score remained the same until half time despite Glen missing clear chances through captain Paul Anderson twice and forcing a superb save from Bowburn keeper Robinson when player-manager Shaun Forster, making an emergency substitute appearance due to lack of numbers, looked certain to score. Glen could sense there were goals to come and duely found five of them in the second half to consign Bowburn to defeat. Glen's second came from Shaun Forster who, somewhat fortuitously, found the net with a curling effort from the right edge of the area which was surey meant as a cross on 51 minutes. The equaliser galvanised Glen who continued to press forward and found a third goal around three minutes later when a good move down the left found skipper Anderson four yards out who could poked the ball home. Forster got his second and Glen's fourth just after the hour when he was played through by Ben Sanderson and finished well over the advancing goalkeeper. The fifth came with around 12 minutes to play. More good football through midfield found Anderson in the area and his shot was blocked by a Bowburn hand for a penalty which Anderson himself stroked home to the goalkeeper's left. The scoring was completed by Forster who bagged his hat-trick goal with six minutes to play. A powerful curling effort from David Wardle smashed against the crossbar and looped into the air, Forster was first to it and slipped the ball beyond Robinson to seal a deserved win.
League News - Sunday 30th November
In the only game played involving a team In the League Hetton Lyons Cricket Club played in the twice-postponed FA Sunday Cup, because the tie had been twice postponed at Hetton the tie was moved to Liverpool to play Lobster at William Collins Ground.
The F.A. Carlsberg Sunday Cup 2nd Round Liverpool Lobster 2 - 3 Hetton Lyons C.C.
Hetton Lyons defence of their National crown began with a victory over Liverpool giants Lobster FC, it was only Hettons second game in 7 weeks through postponments, Sundays win was Hetton's 9th visit to Merseyside and they claimed their 6th win at arguably the hardest place to visit in the competition, but it could've been so different had Lobster taken their opportunities, they controlled the first half and had chances, Jordan Knocton, Liam Nethercote and Mark Bushell all fired wide, Michael Rimmer went closer on two occasions but Keith Finch was in superb form, Lyons manager Bradley Groves said " we rode our luck in the first half and i honestly thought that we were going out of the cup, but a few choice words at the break and the lads responded well" Hetton opened the scoring in 51st minute a deep cross found Brightwell who squared for Leon Ryan to finish neatly from 6 yards, and the centre-half doubled the scoreline on the hour when he headed home a Craig Ruddy cross, Hetton looked to have secured their place in the third round on 82 mins when Jamie Clarke rose majestically at the back post to head home, but an extremely harsh penalty decision ruined Finch's hopes of a clean sheet, Rimmer the scorer, Finch was injured soon after by Lobster sub Alderson and Hetton had used their substitutes, with less than a minute remaining Andrew Bailey scored Lobster's second from the edge of the area, with Finch struggling Hetton kept their nerve to progress through to the third round this Sunday ( 7th Dec ) away at Thornhill Lees from Bradford.

From the Northern Echo, first published Wednesday 28th Mar 2001.
A FOOTBALL league has had to cancel all of its cup competitions because the bad weather has caused a fixture backlog.
Clubs in the Stepy's Coaches Durham Sunday Football League have agreed to the drastic move in a bid to complete the league season on time.
It is the first time in the league's history that this has been proposed.
The bad weather, which has plagued the season, has resulted in more than 400 games needing to be rescheduled.
The season must finish on May 13, and rearranging so many games would have proved an impossible task.
Some teams have only played five league games to date and, with only six weeks left of the season, they would have to play virtually every night to complete the fixtures.
In addition, Durham City Football Club, the venue for the cup finals, have said their ground will not be available.
The competitions which have been cancelled are the Justsport League Cup, Racing Promotions Trophy, Durham City AFC Supporters Trophy, Ramside Hall Hotel Cup Winners Trophy, Durham Driveways Cup and FTC Motorcycles Trophy.
Graham Lilley, the league's honorary secretary, said: "Nobody in the league is happy with this decision.
"But the alternative was the league would not be finished and we would not be affiliated for next season.
"And clubs who had not completed their fixtures would be removed from the league to enable completion."

Referee dies on pitch during match
Thursday 3rd April 2008
A NEWLY-qualified referee collapsed and died in front of dozens of horrified fans and players during a football match.
Andrew Moore, a married father-of-one from Newton Hall, fell to the ground inside the centre circle only minutes into the game on Tuesday evening. The 43-year-old had been a referee for just five months but loved the game and officiated every match he could, often taking control of four in a single weekend.
Former Premier League referee Ken Redfern, a friend of Mr Moore's, said: "He was a fabulous man. He'll be greatly missed."His wife Susan, 37, with whom Mr Moore had a daughter, Sabrina, 12, said he was a loving husband, father and son.Mr Moore died during a Stepy's Coaches Durham and District Sunday League fourth division match between Glendenning Arms and the White Tun, two pub teams from Witton Gilbert, near Durham City.
Barely five minutes of the match, at the village's Cooper Hall community pitch, had elapsed when Mr Moore collapsed while waiting for a goal kick to be taken, at about 6.15pm.
Andrew Sutton, the secretary of the Glendenning Arms team, was standing on the touchline.
He said: "I turned my back and the next thing I knew a crowd of players was around him and the two goalkeepers were running towards him. One of the players was shouting for an ambulance."
Mr Sutton urgently called 999, while an off-duty police officer administered emergency first aid. Paramedics arrived about ten minutes later and took Mr Moore to the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham City. The cause of his death is unknown. The match was immediately abandoned.
Mr Sutton said: "None of us knew quite what to say, but we could read each other's expressions. It was a strange atmosphere afterwards "Before the match, we were all in good spirits. There would have been a good bit of banter between the two teams. I'd spoken to Andy for a good 15 minutes beforehand. He was a genuinely nice guy. He always had time for you, particularly the younger lads on the team.
"On behalf of all involved, we're most sincerely sorry at this tragic event. We wish his family very well."
Jeanette Ryans, landlady of the White Tun, said: "Some of the lads came back to the pub. I couldn't think what to say. They did everything they could."
Mr Moore qualified as a level seven referee in October last year. Despite being at an early stage of his refereeing career, he had a growing reputation and had been chosen to officiate at a cup final later this season.John Topping, secretary of the Durham County Football Association, said: "He was so keen it was unbelievable. Nobody had a bad word for Andy. He'll be a sad miss to everybody connected with refereeing. It's a tragedy."Keith Sutherland, referees' training officer for County Durham, said: "That he'd been chosen for a cup final speaks volumes. He had a great opportunity to go forward and we're very saddened by this, for his family."We had high hopes for him. He was an extremely nice lad. He had experiences that he wanted to share with people. He was a real bonus to our organisation."
Chris Tindale, the Stepy's league's fixtures secretary, said: "Andrew was doing what can at times be a thankless task, but he was doing it with a great deal of keenness. He was showing a great deal of potential. He'll be sadly missed."
Mr Redfern, a Premier League referee until 1994, said: "He was a big man, both in heart and in stature.
"He was a players' referee - that was the most important thing. Not only did he understand the laws, he understood the game."Away from football, Mr Moore, who lived in Newton Hall, Durham, worked as a probation officer and was interested in motor vehicles.Mr Sutton said he would like the Glendenning Arms team to undertake an act of condolence, in tribute to Mr Moore. He said the team would discuss the matter in the next few days.
Kop dream spurs on Lyons' Adam
Hetton Lyons striker Adam Johnston - a Liverpool fan heading for Anfield tomorrow
Published Date: 26 April 2008 Sunderland Echoo
Liverpool fan Adam Johnston was in the stands when the Reds played out a dramatic 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final this week. But tomorrow the Wearsider runs out at Anfield looking to emulate his heroes with a Kop goal. The striker, from Farringdon, leads the line for Hetton Lyons Cricket Club in the FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup final against Coundon Conservatives.
And it could have been his THIRD visit to Anfield this season.Adam said: "It was great to be there on Tuesday. The atmosphere was incredible – the best I've known."It was a magnificent night until the 94th minute, when John Arne Riise scored the own goal."I had tickets for the quarter-final against Arsenal when Liverpool won 4-1."But we got stuck on the M62 for six hours because of a big accident and I was 30 miles from the ground when the game kicked off."We turned round, listened to the game on the radio and got home just in time to catch the highlights on telly!"The gas fitter – who also turns out for champions Durham City in the Northern League First Division – got both of Hetton's goals in their 2-0 semi-final win over Paddock. He also scored in Lyons' 5-2 victory over Luton-based St Joseph's two years ago to win the Sunday Cup."It's gone very well for me this season," said the 28-year-old. "The best I've had."I've scored 44 goals for my Saturday teams and 32 or 33 for Lyons."The goal I got in the final two years ago was at the Anfield Road end, so it would be nice to score in front of the Kop."I'm excited about going back and I think I'll get more from the day this time."When we went two years ago it felt like we arrived, played and were on the bus home before I'd properly taken it all in."Not surprisingly, Johnston fancies Lyons' chances. They have just won the Stepy's Coaches Durham and District Sunday League for an eighth consecutive year and the visit to Anfield is one of five cup finals on the horizon. He added: "Coundon are a good side; you have to be to win this competition and reach successive finals."But I'm confident because we've got such a strong squad. All of us play a lot of games in the season and it takes its toll sometimes when you're going out to work all day and then having to play midweek games.
"But you don't think about that at this part of the season. When you're in cup finals, you look forward to every game."Adam's partner, Leanne, and daughter Isabel will be in the crowd at Anfield, where Hetton are expected to be back by more than 500 supporters.
League News - Sunday 23rd November
In the Premier division Of the Swinburn Maddison Durham Sunday Football League the only game of the Day was the Big Washington derby, Fatfield Biddick Inn were the visitors to GlebeParkto take on the Washington Arms in an entertaining game which ended with the points shared. With both teams committed to attacking football the only surprise was that the final score was only 1-1. Michele DiMascio put the Biddick lads into the lead after thirty five minutes with a twenty five yard free kick which found its way passed the defending wall and into the far corner of the net. In the second half the Arms picked up the tempo in search of an equaliser which came on the sixty fifth minute mark, Chris Morrison powerfully heading home a Paul Anderson corner kick. The Arms continued to push on in search of a winner, however Fatfield Biddick always looked dangerous on the break and in the dying minutes two tremendous saves by the Arms keeper Andy Maddocks to deny Biddick's Paul Kindon ensured the points were deservedly evenly shared.
In a Delayed Durham County Sunday Cup Competition Premier League Leaders Brandon Bay Horse Travelled to Fellow premier Side Ferryhill Wmc, In a Close fought game between the two Premier League teams, although on chances Brandon could have had the game sewn up by half time. The first goal courtesy of a clinical penalty from Andrew Johnson after he himself had been brought down when through on goal. Michael Fort made it 2-0 just before half time with a fine solo run from the halfway line, taking the ball past 3 Ferryhill players before slotting past the goal keeper. The second half saw few chances created from either side, with a Final Score of Ferryhill 0 Brandon Bay Horse 2 , Brandon are now at Home to Hartlepool Lion Hillcarter in the next round.
There was very little between Houghton Mill All Stars and Lumley in the Second Round of the JD Taxi's Guards Cup. In a tight encounter the only goal of the game was scored after thirty minutes when a neat pass from Mill's Robbie Walker was met by David Hall who coolly placed the ball under the body of Lumley's advancing 'keeper Phillip Roughley to put Mill into the next round.
In the First Division Brandon Sports were 6-4 winners Over Birtley Board Inn, Burnmoor Cricket Club Beat Sacriston Cricket Club 2-1 and Esh winning Cricket Club were 5-2 Home winners over Sedgefield Black Lion.

In the Third Division Bowburn Cooperage entertained AFC Newton Hall and after last weeks defeat The Cooperage went in two goals ahead through Mark Finnigan and Michael Harper, after half time AFC Newton Hall pulled one back before Michael Harper got his second of the game a late consolation was not enough for Newton Hall and the final score was Cooperage 3 Newton Hall 2. Pelaw Grange Dog Fc Entertained East Rainton FC, with a boggy pitch the game was never going to be a spectacle and in the first half several players had a difficulty in keeping their feet. Just before half time KevinTurnes scored a neat goal to take Pelaw in 1 -0. In the second half Pelaw missed several chances and then a quick breakaway and movement by East Rainton saw them pull one back. Previous to this a clear foul in the penalty box on Pelaws Neil Worley wasn't given but Dave Donnelly then had a great run through to put Pelaw back in front and then with 2 minutes to go,, the referee gave a penalty to East Rainton f which they gleefully tuck away in the right hand corner. To level the scores at Full Time of 2-2
In the Fourth Division After a number of weeks without a game, due to Postponed Games Washington Usworth Top Club cruised to a 4.0 away victory at Sedgefield Cross hills. 2 goals from Costa Lorraine and goals a piece from Cal Welch and Steven Duffield give top club there 4th league victory. fielding a much weakened side Framwellgate Moor wmc had to work hard to beat Ferryhill Surtees 2- 1 Anthony Ormiston and Dave Pratt the scorers. League leaders Washington Duke of Albany FC produced an indifferent display against Bowburn Crowtrees. Both teams were guilty of wasting opportunities although it was the home team who were creating the most chances. In the end goals from Ritchie Lowthian (2), Andrew Cameron, Mark Liddle, Steven Talbot and Lee Bradburn gave the Duke a 6-0 win. The home team could have easily hit double figures with better finishing, while Bowburn were thwarted by the post and two point blank saves from the Duke keeper.
League News - Sunday 16th November
Ferryhill Surtees 3-0 Glendenning Arms Not a pretty game by any means, this match was contested on an awful pitch on a cold, windy day which saw both teams struggle to play much cohesive football. From the beginning conditions underfoot were difficult to say the least with players slipping and sliding and nobody really getting the game, or ball for that matter, under control. Glen were struggling to get out of their own half for the first ten minutes as Surtees had both the slope and wind to their advantage and had attempted a couple of speculative efforts before forcing a breakthrough from a corner after 11 minutes. The ball was delivered deep from the left and was half cleared before being forced back into the right side of the area where Snaith fired a shot towards the far post which struck Glen skipper Paul Anderson and beat the helpless Grant before he could react. Surtees continued to use the conditions to their advantage and despite their best efforts to play their usual passing game Glen were becoming increasingly frustrated as they controlled the last 25 minutes of the first half and saw several moves end in nothing with Sanderson twice slicing shots wide, Anderson firing a free-kick over the bar and Winter coming agonisingly close to making contact with a superb cross from full-back Sean Glendinning when he seemed certain to score. The closest Glen came was from a left-wing corner which was delivered into the area by Chris Wharton and the resulting scramble seeing Pearson, Sanderson and Winter have shots blocked before Surtees managed to clear their lines. The second half should have given Glen the opportunity to get the goal they were after but, rather than taking advantage of their superiority several more chances were spurned and the final pass was always overhit, badly placed or blocked by a Surtees defender. The Glen's best chance fell to Winter who beat the Surtees centre back and drove into the left side of the area but his shot found the side netting when he should really have done better. As Glen continued to press forward for the equaliser they found themselves twice exposed on the counter attack, firstly on 68 minutes when a good ball from midfield found Surtees striker Dale Aunger in space 20 yards out and, after selling Grant a dummy, rounded the stranded keeper and rolled the ball into the empty net. The third goal came with only a minute to play. Again, a ball from midfield was Glen's undoing as Lee Hutchinson found space in the left channel and strode onto the pass before dinking the ball over the on-rushing keeper to give Surtees the points and a score-line which flattered them.

League News - Sunday 2nd November
In the Premier division the Washington Arms are still searching for a first league win, a good performance against high flyers Kelloe Wmc is unrewarded and they go down 2-3. The Arms open the scoring with a David Lyall strike on the twenty minute mark; however in a fruitful fifteen minute spell Gavin Barton blasts Kelloe into the lead with a well taken hat-trick. A John Robson goal with twelve minutes remaining gives the Arms a lifeline but Kelloe hung on to take the three points and move closer to the top spot. Sedgefield St. Edmunds entertained Pelton RAOB and won 3-1 Pelton opened the scoring after 25 minutes, and it stayed 1 - 0 until half time, but 3 second half goals one from Eddie Johnson (55mins) and two fine strikes from left back Mark Ferguson (65 & 75 mins) gave Sedgefield a 3-1 win. Langley Park wmc were 2-1 Home winners Over Burnside Wmc
A cold Sunday morning at Sedgefield saw The Black Lion entertain Lumley Fc in the First Division. The visitors dominated the early part of the match & a Glen Jackson strike gave Lumley the lead. In the second half Steven Roughley secured a 2-0 victory when his cross come shot ended in the net. Burnmoor Cricket Club entertained Esh winning Cricket Club, goals from Brian Gott and Aaron Scott were not enough to prevent Esh from loosing 3-2.
In the Second Division Hilda Park were 3-2 winners over visitors Washington JFC, Chester Plough lost 1-0 at Pittington, Gilesgate Moor Hotel were 5-1 Home winners over Durham Bede Lodge
In the Third Division East Rainton entertained Pelaw Grange Dog Track Fc ,the Home side were pressed back from the KO but against the Run of play took the Lead on 7 mins .It wasn't long however before Pelaw Struck back with Neil Worley scoring . After some good work Russell Fowler then scored and it was 1- 2 to Pelaw at half time. In the second half Pelaw went 4-1 up with goals from Russell Fowler and a goal by Kevin Turnes from a free kick just outside of East Rain tons box. East Rainton then had a penalty saved before substitute David Young made it 1-5.Coxhoe wmc were 6-1 winners at Bowburn Cooperage, Ushaw Moor Cricket Club thanks to goals from Jay Wilson 4; Scott Nattrass and Craig Flowers were 6-0 winners at Washington Ox and Plough. The Osborne were 2-1 home winners over Hetton Social
In the Fourth Division Despite having 4 first team regulars missing Witton Gilbert managed to record their first league victory of the season with a battling 3-2 win at Pelton Bird Inn. A very good first Half with the scores level at 2-2.Witton Club opened the scoring through John Renwick who netted from 12 yards with his left foot. The lead was short lived as Pelton equalised direct from a free kick just outside the box which found its way through the Witton defensive wall.Witton regained the lead when a goalmouth scramble led to the ball falling at Jack Cleckners feet and he finished smartly. Again the lead didnt last long, a free kick was awarded and the resultant free kick was deflected in from 6 yards by the Pelton striker. The second half was a different story however and Pelton had a lot of possession but were guilty of missing some good opportunities. With 20 minutes remaining Witton were awarded a free kick and Ian Renwick curled the ball in over the keepers head from 25 yards for a gutsy win for Witton. Ferryhill Surtees were 4-2 winners over visistors Sedgefield Crosshills, The Duke of Albany were 7-0 Home winners over Quarrington Hill Wmc.
The Glendenning Arms entertained Langley Park Sports and Social this was a game which the Glen managed to throw away from a winning position. The opening five minutes were fairly even and saw both teams win themselves corners which came to nothing as they battled to gain control of the match. The first shot on goal came in the 9th minute. Langley Park forward Tony Rutter picked the ball up 25 yards out, wriggled through two challenges and forced Glen keeper Andy Grant into a smart save at his near post. This stirred Glen into life and they could have taken the lead in the 11th minute after a nice passing move involving Sanderson, Dixon and Wardle saw the ball worked out left to Wharton. His first touch wrong-footed Langley Park full-back Michael Cant and gave him room to dink a cross in for Wardle, who had carried his run from midfield, to flick his header over the bar from eight yards. Glen continued to play the better football and worked Langley keeper Peter Caulfield again in the 18th minute with an Andrew Goodburn shot from 20 yards out. Despite not having much possession Langley managed to have a couple of strikes at goal themselves. In the 29th minute a free kick 25 yards out was bent just wide of Grant's left hand post by Langley skipper Keith Caulfield and two minutes later Michael Watson's 20 yard effort was saved comfortably by Grant in the middle of his goal. Glen's passing and movement in midfield was causing Langley all kinds of problems and proved their undoing in the 37th minute. Some good passing found Glen captain Paul Anderson wide on the left and a nice piece of skill afforded him the room a whip over a cross which was missed by the goalkeeper and diverted in at the far post by Langley left-back Simon Huscroft under pressure from Andrew Wood. Three minutes later an excellent sliding challenge from Anderson stopped Rutter having a clean run on goal after he looked to have been put clear half way into the Glen half of the field. The first half didn't see any further chances and ended with Glen a goal to the good. The lead was increased just over a minute into the second half. A loose ball was picked up in the centre circle by Ben Sanderson who spotted Winter in space between the right-back and centre-back and fed him with a superb ball which he strode onto and stroked into the bottom right corner of the net. Langley got a goal back on 50 minutes when a left wing corner was slammed into the net by Keith Caulfield seven yards out .. Glen went on in search of a third goal and almost found it in the 53rd minute when Winter's flicked header from a Paul Dixon cross hit the face of the bar and evaded Wood at the far post. Langley were looking dangerous on the counter and the pace of Rutter forced Wharton to make an excellent challenge on the edge of the box when he looked to have found a way though the Glen's back line. Glen again went close when Goodburn played Wardle through in the left channel but his cross evaded Dixon by inches as he through himself at it at the far post. The third goal came a minute later. Some more good work by The Glen midfielder, bent a dipping effort beyond the keeper but onto the crossbar. The rebound was picked up by Winter who turned sharply eight yards out and slid the ball under the keeper with his left foot on the half turn for his second of the match. Glen then seemed to switch off and allowed Langley back into the game. On 62 minutes Grant was called into action when Rutter had an effort from 20 yards and a scramble in the Glen area in the 77th minute saw the keeper make another smart save low to his left. Langley scored what appeared to be a goal on 88 minutes when Keith Caulfield forced the ball in at the far post for his second goal after some confusion in the Glen back line. Langley too heart from this and managed to force an equaliser in the 90th minute. The ball was fired over from the left and keeper Grant came sliding out to collect it three yards out but was met by Paul Humberstone which saw the ball squirm into the net to make it 3-3 .The final whistle was sounded moments later and saw Langley Park collect a point and see both clubs continue their recent unbeaten runs.

Coxhoe looked dead and buried but mounted a superb comebackTheir 1st goal was scored by Lawson who converted a left wing cross from Stephenson.
