League News - Sunday 19th October
Brandon Bay Horse extended their lead at the top of Premier division with a fine 4-2 win at Washington Arms. In an evenly matched first half Brandon gained the advantage with a Paul Eilles goal on the thirty five minute mark. Further goals mid way through the second half from Tony Hanson, Michael Fort and a second from Eilles give Brandon a comfortable lead. The hard working Washington Arms lads earned a couple of consolation goals late in the game with a fine individual strike from John Robson and a own goal following a miss understanding between Brandons keeper Steven McIntre and defender Colin Wood. Final score On Thursday Night under the Floodlights at Eppleton Hetton Lyons Cricket Club entertained Kelloe Wmc in a Premier League Game.In a highly competitive and entertaining game, Kelloe took a 3 - 2 led into the break with goals from Kieron Megran (2) and Gavin Barton. After the break Hetton Lyons started the stronger and quickly levelled before taking the lead with an excellent well worked goal. With only 5 minutes left Chris Smith dribbled through the Hetton defence to coolly chip the Hetton keeper to equalize. With only seconds remaining Andrew Soppitt scored the winning goal with a diving header. To make the result 5 - 4 to Kelloe WMC FC. Houghton Glendale was 2-1 Home winners over Burnside Wmc.In the First Division Sacriston wmc were 2-1 winners at Birtley Board Inn and Sacriston Cricket Club were 9-1 Home winners over Sedgefield Black Lion,Thanks to Goals fromGary Draper 3,John Robson,Chris Yates 4 , Robert Nixon 2
In the Second Division Steelers were 1-0 winners at Durham Bede Lodge Michael Nichol produced a touch of brilliance to put the visitors 1 0 up.Just before Half time. The score remained the same at full time.Goals from Simms, Burnett and Smith Gave Hilda Park a 3-1 away win ay Pittington Fc
In the Third Divison Pelaw Grange Travelled to the Ox and Plough In Washington, Pelaw were without there forward Andy Tippins But Striker Kevin Turnes returned to action after being out injured. The game itself was as dull as the day with play that seemed to be bogged down on a heavy pitch. After approx 30 minutes a good pass from Russell Fowler put Neil Worley through to score the first goal.the Put Pelaw 1-0 ahead then 5 minutes later a corner from Chris Hawkins saw his brother Phil score a simple header as he was unmarked to make it 2-0 .The second half saw Kevin Turnes finally getting his goal with a header. To make it 3-0 to Pelaw. Washington Nissan Sports and visitors Houghton Chilton Losdge shared the Points in a 2-2 Draw., While Coxhoe Wmc were well beaten at Home by AFC Newton Hall 7-4
In the Fourth Divison A top of the table clash saw Washington Duke of Albany take on league leaders Shadforth Plough. The home team making do without Ryan Mason, Jamie Sherriff and Robert Casey, while Chris Mason, Joe Simpson and Jonathan Finch were unavailable for the visitors. It was Shadforth who got the game under way and started brightest. A succession of free kicks and throw ins deep in the Duke of Albany half were being dealt with by the home defence, as Shadforth tried to maintain their early territorial advantage. The first chance of the game fell to Shadforth's tall front man Jack Moore after a good cross from the left, he sidefooted the ball from 8 yards but it drifted wide of the far post. The Duke were fighting their way back into the game and it was they who took the lead, albeit with a touch of good fortune and still slightly against the run of play. A ball was played forward from midfield and as the Shadforth defender tried to clear it, he inadvertently lobbed his own keeper to give the home side the lead. This gave the Duke a lift and they started to take a hold of the game, closing the Shadforth players down quickly and passing the ball well. On the half hour mark the Duke extended their lead when a free kick was turned home by Liam Barnett, his first for the club. The referee brought the first half to a close as the home side went in leading 2-0. In the second half, Shadforth once again started with good intent, pressing forward and looking to get an early goal to get back into the game. With only one up front though, they struggled to trouble the Duke defence with the second balls being mopped up and cleared. Richie Lowthian spurned 2 excellent opportunities to further extend the home team's advantage, but the Duke did eventually score a 3rd after excellent play from Steven Talbot who won the ball in midfield and carried it forward, he shot low and hard into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance. Almost immediately from the kick off, Shadforth got a lifeline, sloppy defending allowing Stephen Clifford to race into the box, he finished well past the onrushing keeper to make it 3-1. The game continued in the same vein, Shadforth looking for the long ball to the big front man Jack Moore, but the Duke defence dealing with the threat and crating chances on the break. Shadforth's Graeme Coxon was booked in the final minute for a mistimed tackle on Lee Bradburn, and the referee brought the game to a finish not long after, final score Washington Duke of Albany 3 - 1 Shadforth Plough. Nevilles Cross Social entertained Witton Gilbert Wmc This game was excellently refereed by Chris Bramley. The match itself was a real game of 2 halves.Witton Gilbert led 3-1 at half time with 2 goals from Ian Renwick and a 25 yard screamer from Jason Manners. Nevilles cross deservedly had pulled a goal back .After half time Nevilles Cross got a second in the first 10 minutes and were then awarded a penalty following a handball which was converted. With the wind in their sails Nevilles cross then took the lead for the first time but Witton never gave it up and deservedly got the equaliser 10 minutes from time through Gary Carruthers. The game could have gone either way in the last 10 minutes and it should be stated that there was not a single bad tackle in the game played in good spirit by both sides, helped by the referee.
In the NTL Transport Trophy 1st Round Glendenning Arms 4-3 Washington Colliery. This turned out to be an entertaining and very combative game in the first round of the NTL Transport League Cup and included two hat-tricks. Third Division Washington Colliery started the game as favourites but soon found that the Glen were no pushovers. The first chance of the game came on eight minutes and fell to Colliery, a ball between the central defenders finding Colliery's striker but his shot was straight at Glen keeper Andy Grant. Glen were playing most of the football but found themselves a goal behind in the 23rd minute, somewhat against the run of play. A ball down the Colliery right split the defence and found their striker just inside the area, Glen full-back Aaron White made a challenge and, although appearing to play the ball, a penalty was awarded by referee Quinn and duely dispatched by Colliery's number 10 who sent Grant the wrong way. Glen continued to probe and made chances without troubling Colliery's keeper, Sanderson sending a 23 yard free kick just wide of the keeper's left post on the half hour mark as well as dragging a mis-hit shot wide moments earlier. Glen almost fell further behind on 32 mins when Colliery broke forward, a shot from the edge of the area was blocked by the head of Glen central defender Summers and luckily hit the left post and bounced clear. Glen's equaliser came on 36 minutes. Captain Paul Anderson won the ball in the centre circle and fed Winter who had pulled into the left channel, he drove into the box and chipped a cross to the near post which Sanderson met with a flicked header, the ball hitting the foot of the post as it crossed the line. The match continued to be hard fought and several robust challenges went unpunished as the game headed towards half time. Colliery regained the advantage on 42 minutes with another breakaway goal. The ball was worked through the centre of the field before finding Colliery's striker 15 yards from goal, he evaded a challenge from Summers and tucked the ball into the right corner of the net from 9 yards out. Glen started to second half full of attacking intent and were soon troubling Colliery's back four as Sanderson got free just inside the area, unfortunately his shot was off target and drifted wide but this was to be the start of a period of Glen pressure. On 49 minutes Glen forced a corner which was swung in by Turnbull from the right, Anderson got a flick to it at the near post which struck a Colliery defender on the arm for a penalty which Anderson himself took. His spot kick had enough power to find the net despite Colliery's keeper getting a hand to it. Glen continued to pressurise in pursuit of a third goal and went close on a couple of occasions, most notably with Wardle putting a 25 yard effort just over the bar. Colliery should have taken the lead themselves on 62 minutes but the striker's shot rattled the crossbar from ten yards when it was surely easier to score. Colliery did re-take the lead shortly after this on around 64 minutes. A corner from the right was only partially cleared and the ball was fired into the six yard box to be tucked away by Colliery's number 10 for his hat-trick when he looked to be a good yard offside. This seemed to stir the Glen back into life and the equaliser came immediately from the re-start, a good ball from Wardle found Sanderson's run and he made no mistake from 15 yards with a firm finish for his second goal. Glen were well in control at this stage and were finding plenty of space in midfield where Wardle and Goodburn's hard running was causing no end of trouble. The winning goal came from a good team move. Dixon picked up the ball at right back and fed Wardle in front of him, he skipped past a Colliery challenge and carried the ball over half way before feeding Paul Luke who had found space on the right touch-line. Luke's first touch allowed him time to size up his options and he produced an excellent low cross into the box which was prodded home by man-of-the-match Sanderson sliding in on the six-yard line for his hat-trick. Colliery continued to battle hard but could not find their way past the Glen's back four and resorted to long-range efforts which didn't trouble Grant in the Glen goal. Sanderson could have bagged himself a fourth on 80 mins when a nice pass from Luke found him in the area, a nice piece of skill left the Colliery central defender on his back but the left foot shot was sliced wide when everyone expected the net to bulge. Goodburn had a chance to put a gloss on the result with around a minute to go. After winning the ball 30 yards from goal the midfielder rampaged into the area but poked his shot wide under pressure from Colliery's central defender. The final whistle confirmed the Glen's victory and they advance into the second round.
In the Deerness Driveways Trophy 1st Round Fram Moor played well below themselves two goals down in about 7 mins drew one back by Ian Fields in the 29th min eventually losing 4 -1 Towards the end of the first half Ian Fields was injured in a collision with the goal keeper taking to hospital after game still in hospital poorly may have internal bleeding

Washingtons two premier division sides clashed in an entertaining derby game at Glebe Park Washington .
The Washington Arms entertaining the Fatfield Biddick Inn.. The Arms create the first opportunity and should have opened the scoring in the first minute John Robson shooting wide. But the Biddick Inn soon take command and after going close a couple of times take the lead after ten minutes with a Jamie Haughey right foot volley from the edge of the box . After twenty five minutes Paul Kindon forces the Arms defenders into a poor clearance which is latched onto by Deano who hits a magnificent volley from twenty five yards to make it 2-0. Ten minutes later the rampant Biddick lads extend their lead to 3-0, an Anth Morrel free kick taking a wicked bounce to deceive Arms and former Biddick keeper Andy Maddox. The half time reorganisation by the Arms pays off within five minutes of the restart, great work down the right ending with a cross by Chris Morrison thats headed into his own goal by defender Stuart Anderson. Almost immediately Biddick respond, Jamie Haughey stabbing home an Anth Morrel free kick to make it 4-1. The Arms make a sterling effort to get bake into the game, Mark Robson latches on to a through ball to hammer home the second and then with five minutes to go Chris Morrison heads home to make it 4-3. For the remainder of the game the Arms lay siege to the Biddick goal but stout defending ensures the Biddick Inn take all three points.
It was a warm autumnal morning at Eppleton Cw for Hetton Lyons to entertain Burnside Wmc, Hetton looking to avenge the Early season defeat at Burnside It was the Home side Hetton who stormed into a 5 - 0 lead at the interval but for an outstanding performance by the Burnside keeper Alan Maskell the goal margin would have been much greater. Hetton Striker Mickey Reay grabbed 5, with one each for Adam Johnson, Gavin Cogdon and new boy John Rudd with a superb solo run of 40 yards to finish past a helpless Maskell .Newton Aycliffe WMC were 3-2 Home winners over visitors Houghton Glendale Social.
In Division One Houghton Mill All Stars conceded three first-half goals away to Sedgefield Black Lion. Mill rallied in the second half but despite a number of goal scoring opportunities they were unable to reduce the deficit and even missed two penalty kicks - the Sedgefield 'keeper saved a Richard Addison spot kick and Steve Fenn crashed his kick against the cross bar - Sedgefield ran out 3-0 winners. Sacriston Wmc were at Lumley Fc Lumleys Man of the Match Richard Ward Gave Lumley the Lead, Lumley's Stand in Skipper Glen Jackson Almost Doubled the Lead, But Was Denied By The Woodwork. In the Fourth Division goals from Steven Talbot, Ritchie Lowthian and Mark Liddle secured the 3 points for the Washington Duke of Albany against Visitors Framwellgate Moor Wmc.
Framwellgate had a chance to claim a consolation goal late on, but a mix up between the two strikers saw the ball run across the face of goal and out of play. Special praise to Peter Quinn who had a superb first game as referee.
Quarrington Hill entertained the Witton Gilbert Glendenning Arms. Both teams went into this match looking for a win, Quarrington Hill having won 1 of their six games and Glen looking for a first win in only their third league match of the campaign. The opening exchanges of this match were fairly even, Glen playing some decent football and Quarrington Hill looking dangerous on the counter. The first real chance fell to the Glen. A decent move through the centre of the field finishing with Anderson teeing up Sanderson on the edge of the area but his shot was scuffed and drifted harmlessly wide. The breakthrough came on 28 minutes. Summers won the ball in defence and fed Goodburn who found Wharton wide on the right. His touch took him clear of the full back and his ball in found Sanderson in the area who squared to Anderson 7 yards out leaving the Glen skipper with an easy finish. The lead lasted only six minutes and Quarrington Hill pulled themselves level with a neat move down the left finding their striker in space and he finished neatly over the advancing keeper. The half ended 1-1. Glen came out quickly in the second half and forced a corner after only 40 seconds. Turnbull swung in a deep corner from the right which found Paul Luke unmarked at the far post and his close range header restored the advantage for the Glen. Quarrington Hill battled their way back into the game and created a couple of decent openings, testing Glen keeper Andy Grant on more than one occasion before forcing an equaliser on 67 minutes. A foul by Glen full back Sean Glendinning around 45 yards from goal gave Quarrington Hill the chance of a set piece. The ball was flighted in to the back post and found Quarrington Hill's striker unmarked to force the ball towards goal. Despite Grant getting a hand to the ball and strong suspicions of a handball it found its way over the line for the equaliser. Quarrington Hill continued to apply pressure, hit a post on 74 minutes and went one-on-one with the goalkeeper three times, but due to a combination of poor finishing and some heroic saves from man-of the-match Grant, could not find a winner and the game finished 2-2.
Sedgefield Crosshills won 2-0 at Kelloe Davy Lamp, Langley Park Sports and Social were 3-2 winners at Pelton Bird Inn and Nevilles Cross Social were 3-2 Home winners over Ferryhill Surtees.

Bowburn also had their chances and forced Glen keeper Andy Grant into one particularly good save at his left-hand post, palming over a powerful strike. Only seconds into the second period of extra time Bowburn again took the lead with a breakaway goal, a firm finish from 2 yards inside the box. Glen continued to pile forward and got their reward when substitute David Wardle was fouled in the box, skipper Paul Anderson coolly despatching the resulting penalty. The match itself ended 2-2.
