In the Fourth Divison A top of the table clash saw Washington Duke of Albany take on league leaders Shadforth Plough.  The home team making do without Ryan Mason, Jamie Sherriff and Robert Casey, while Chris Mason, Joe Simpson and Jonathan Finch were unavailable for the visitors.  It was Shadforth who got the game under way and started brightest.  A succession of free kicks and throw ins deep in the Duke of Albany half were being dealt with by the home defence, as Shadforth tried to maintain their early territorial advantage.  The first chance of the game fell to Shadforth's tall front man Jack Moore after a good cross from the left, he sidefooted the ball from 8 yards but it drifted wide of the far post.  The Duke were fighting their way back into the game and it was they who took the lead, albeit with a touch of good fortune and still slightly against the run of play.  A ball was played forward from midfield and as the Shadforth defender tried to clear it, he inadvertently lobbed his own keeper to give the home side the lead.  This gave the Duke a lift and they started to take a hold of the game, closing the Shadforth players down quickly and passing the ball well.  On the half hour mark the Duke extended their lead when a free kick was turned home by Liam Barnett, his first for the club.  The referee brought the first half to a close as the home side went in leading 2-0. In the second half, Shadforth once again started with good intent, pressing forward and looking to get an early goal to get back into the game.  With only one up front though, they struggled to trouble the Duke defence with the second balls being mopped up and cleared.  Richie Lowthian spurned 2 excellent opportunities to further extend the home team's advantage, but the Duke did eventually score a 3rd after excellent play from Steven Talbot who won the ball in midfield and carried it forward, he shot low and hard into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance.  Almost immediately from the kick off, Shadforth got a lifeline, sloppy defending allowing Stephen Clifford to race into the box, he finished well past the onrushing keeper to make it 3-1.  The game continued in the same vein, Shadforth looking for the long ball to the big front man Jack Moore, but the Duke defence dealing with the threat and crating chances on the break.  Shadforth's Graeme Coxon was booked in the final minute for a mistimed tackle on Lee Bradburn, and the referee brought the game to a finish not long after, final score Washington Duke of Albany 3 - 1 Shadforth Plough. Nevilles Cross Social entertained  Witton Gilbert Wmc  This game was excellently refereed by Chris Bramley. The match itself was a real game of 2 halves.Witton Gilbert led 3-1 at half time with 2 goals from Ian Renwick and a 25 yard screamer from Jason Manners. With the wind in their sails Nevilles cross then took the lead for the first time but Witton never gave it up and deservedly got the equaliser 10 minutes from time through Gary Carruthers. The game could have gone either way in the last 10 minutes and it should be stated that there was not a single bad tackle in the game played in good spirit by both sides, helped by the referee.

In the NTL Transport Trophy  1st Round Glendenning Arms 4-3 Washington Colliery. This turned out to be an entertaining and very combative game in the first round of the NTL Transport League Cup and included two hat-tricks. Third Division Washington Colliery started the game as favourites but soon found that the Glen were no pushovers. The first chance of the game came on eight minutes and fell to Colliery, a ball between the central defenders finding Colliery's striker but his shot was straight at Glen keeper Andy Grant. Glen were playing most of the football but found themselves a goal behind in the 23rd minute, somewhat against the run of play. A ball down the Colliery right split the defence and found their striker just inside the area, Glen full-back Aaron White made a challenge and, although appearing to play the ball, a penalty was awarded by referee Quinn and duely dispatched by Colliery's number 10 who sent Grant the wrong way. Glen continued to probe and made chances without troubling Colliery's keeper, Sanderson sending a 23 yard free kick just wide of the keeper's left post on the half hour mark as well as dragging a mis-hit shot wide moments earlier.  Glen almost fell further behind on 32 mins when Colliery broke forward, a shot from the edge of the area was blocked by the head of Glen central defender Summers and luckily hit the left post and bounced clear. Glen's equaliser came on 36 minutes. Captain Paul Anderson won the ball in the centre circle and fed Winter who had pulled into the left channel, he drove into the box and chipped a cross to the near post which Sanderson met with a flicked header, the ball hitting the foot of the post as it crossed the line. The match continued to be hard fought and several robust challenges went unpunished as the game headed towards half time. Colliery regained the advantage on 42 minutes with another breakaway goal. The ball was worked through the centre of the field before finding Colliery's striker 15 yards from goal, he evaded a challenge from Summers and tucked the ball into the right corner of the net from 9 yards out. Glen started to second half full of attacking intent and were soon troubling Colliery's back four as Sanderson got free just inside the area, unfortunately his shot was off target and drifted wide but this was to be the start of a period of Glen pressure. On 49 minutes Glen forced a corner which was swung in by Turnbull from the right, Anderson got a flick to it at the near post which struck a Colliery defender on the arm for a penalty which Anderson himself took. His spot kick had enough power to find the net despite Colliery's keeper getting a hand to it. Glen continued to pressurise in pursuit of a third goal and went close on a couple of occasions, most notably with Wardle putting a 25 yard effort just over the bar. Colliery should have taken the lead themselves on 62 minutes but the striker's shot rattled the crossbar from ten yards when it was surely easier to score. Colliery did re-take the lead shortly after this on around 64 minutes. A corner from the right was only partially cleared and the ball was fired into the six yard box to be tucked away by Colliery's number 10 for his hat-trick when he looked to be a good yard offside. This seemed to stir the Glen back into life and the equaliser came immediately from the re-start, a good ball from Wardle found Sanderson's run and he made no mistake from 15 yards with a firm finish for his second goal. Glen were well in control at this stage and were finding plenty of space in midfield where Wardle and Goodburn's hard running was causing no end of trouble. The winning goal came from a good team move. Dixon picked up the ball at right back and fed Wardle in front of him, he skipped past a Colliery challenge and carried the ball over half way before feeding Paul Luke who had found space on the right touch-line. Luke's first touch allowed him time to size up his options and he produced an excellent low cross into the box which was prodded home by man-of-the-match Sanderson sliding in on the six-yard line for his hat-trick. Colliery continued to battle hard but could not find their way past the Glen's back four and resorted to long-range efforts which didn't trouble Grant in the Glen goal. Sanderson could have bagged himself a fourth on 80 mins when a nice pass from Luke found him in the area, a nice piece of skill left the Colliery central defender on his back but the left foot shot was sliced wide when everyone expected the net to bulge. Goodburn had a chance to put a gloss on the result with around a minute to go. After winning the ball 30 yards from goal the midfielder rampaged into the area but poked his shot wide under pressure from Colliery's central defender. The final whistle confirmed the Glen's victory and they advance into the second round.
