The Cricketers On top of the world
By Groundhopper
The bad weather of the last three weeks relented allowing a Full Fixture List of Games in the League. With Hetton Lyons Cricket Club on FA Sunday Cup Duty, Sacristan Cricket Club were Looking to Move Clear at the Top of the Premier Division. The Cricketers entertaining Langley Park Wmc at the Welfare Ground. The First 20 mins were evenly Matched both side looking for an Opening, The Cricketers broke the deadlock in the 20 min Graham Embleton took a corner for the Cricketers, and he found the head of Gary Draper who headed in to the net from six yards out with a clinical headed goal. The score remained the same as Both sides Looked to score, again late in the second Half in the 75 min the Cricketers went further ahead when Gary Draper Converted from just inside the box with a right footed finish, it was a spectacular individual goal which Gary Draper wont forget! The move started with some clever play from Sam Renwick. Then with three Mins remaining the Cricketers scored again a direct free-kick was given outside the area. Graham Embleton ran up and fired home a brilliant right footed shot past the Langley keeper. This gave the Cricketers a Fine 3-0 Home win over Langley Park Wmc and put them 3 Points clear at the Top of the Division. Elton ROAB travelled to Burnside Wmc and for the 2nd consecutive week they failed to perform to the best of their ability, Elton conceded two bad goals, and were very happy to take a point and Pelton could have pinched it at the death but the Burnside Keeper made a superb save from Tony Healer. The Goals for Pelton came in the 12 min Luke Kerry fired home from long range with a well-finished right foot goal, following a through-ball from Tony Healer. Then in the 76 min Luke Kerry Converted from just inside the box with the left foot, beating the Burnside keeper. In the Other Premiership Game Newton Aycliffe wmc were 2-1 winners at Brandon Bay Horse.
Washington Arms entertained Chester Hilda Park After a goal-less first half the first division encounter between Washington Arms and Chester Hilda Park came to life in the second period. The Arms defenders make a rare mistake to allow in Hilda Park to open the scoring after fifty five minutes. However the Arms respond immediately with a Chris Morrison equaliser and go on to take the lead three minutes later with a Danny Murray penalty. The Arms continue to press forward and put the result beyond doubt with a superb eightieth minute effort from Andy Wilson to make it 3-1. Fatfield Biddick Inn were 5-3 Home winners over Birtley Board Inn, Esh Winning Cricket Club crashed to a 5-3 Defeat at Gilesgate Moor Hotel
Houghton Mill All Stars were comfortable 5-0 winners away at Waterhouses FC. David Hall drilled the ball nicely into the corner of the net after fifteen minutes for the only goal of the first half. Mill doubled their lead when a Nick Thompson cross rebounded off Steve Fenn for Andy Adey to knock home. Steve Malloy, yet to score this season then added a further two – the first after sixty five minutes from a Nick Thompson free kick and five minutes later Malloy rounded keeper Neil Heslop before firing into an empty net. On eighty minutes David Hall rounded keeper Heslop again for Mill's fifth.
In the Second Division League Leaders Pelton Fc were beaten 5-2 at Chester Osborne Wmc.Second Placed Ushaw Moor Cricket Club Travelled to Bishop Middleham Cross Keys and returned Home 3-1 winners. Chester-le-Street Plough Inn entertained Durham Bede Lodge. The Plough side had a few players missing this morning with only Teddy Daglish on the bench. The Plough Inn got the game under way and immediately had Bede Lodge on the back foot forcing a number of early corners but unfortunately couldn’t take advantage. The Plough thought they had grabbed an early lead when the ball was cut back to Joel Baddams who shot at goal only for the Bede Lodge keeper to make a great save from point blank range. The Plough Inn grabbed their deserved lead in the 37th minute when Mark Atchison played the ball up to Daniel Hill who played into John Forster on goal who made no mistake firing the ball into the corner of the net past the outstretched arms of the keeper for his first of the season. This made the Half time score 1-0 to the Plough The Plough started the second half like the first and took the game to the Bede Lodge . The Plough created a number of early chances for Hill and Lloyd up front which they both would normally convert but unfortunately failed to hit the target. Not one for his head to drop top goals corer Daniel Hill made amends for his earlier misses by creating a goal for himself. He won the ball from the opposing defender sum 30 yards out from goal and raced into the penalty area and finished superbly past the keeper. The goal was more than deserved and hoped to really build on this and put the game to bed. The home side seemed to do this in the 65th minute with a contender for goal of the season; unfortunately Chris Kamara wasn’t there to see it! Mark Atchison played the ball up to Daniel Hill down the left hand side who turned his man and played in Nathan Baddams to run onto and curl the ball over the keepers head into the roof of the net! Superb finish from the midfield dynamo! The Plough were now in cruise control and Bede Lodge looked to be dead and buried, but unfortunately The Plough hit the self destruct button. The ball was played high into the Ploughs penalty area when Plough defender Andrew McGuiness ran into the back of the Bede Lodge player. Referee Bobby Robson pointed to the spot and Paul Richardson for Bede made no mistake with his pen. Although this was the away sides first shot on goal it certainly gave them a massive lift as they looked to get back into the game. Only minutes late Bede Lodge pulled another goal back with what can only be described as a goalkeeping howler. Jon Witherspoon the Plough Keeper took the goal kick which went straight to Bede Lodge player Jonathan Kelly 40 yards out from goal who took a touch and just hit the ball high towards goal. At this stage it looked as if it was going wide, .unfortunately Plough goalkeeper Witherspoon forced the ball down and into the net with around twelve minutes remaining it was game on now with Bede Lodge's confidence growing. They did have a chance a minute later forcing Witherspoon into a fine finger tip save round the post. In the last ten minutes of the game the home side still had a number of chances to put the game beyond doubt but couldn’t take them. Atchison forced a great save from the keeper and Joel Baddams thought he had scored when he rounded the keeper only to put the ball wide of the target. The home side stayed strong in the final minutes to take the three valuable points. In the Game at Sherburn Leisure Centre Home side Pittington crashed to a 5-1 Home Defeat from Visitors Washington Lambton Village Inn .The Steelers were 3-1 Home winners Over Sherburn Lambton Arms.
Inn the Third Division Sedgefield Net Park maintained Third Place with a 4-2 Home win over Houghton Chilton Lodge, Martin Broom, Joe Burke, Peter Sedgewick and Malcolm Dickenson scoring the Net Park Goals. The Leaders in the Division Washington Victoria and second Placed Washington Usworth Top Club played out a Derby Game in Washington . The Victoria depleted squad due to Injuries and work Commitments , But the Victoria started this game very brightly and took the lead after good work from Mark Liddle who crossed for Paul Kindon to convert from close range. Mark Liddle then doubled the lead from the spot following a foul near the edge of the box on Ryan Mason. Mark Liddle converted it with the keeper getting a hand on it. The Victoria seemed to relax and the game turned on its head with two quick goals from the Usworth Top Club, to level the scores. The Second half saw the Victoria start slowly but regained the lead through Paul Kindon as he cut inside and drilled into the bottom corner. Mark Liddle then increased the Vics lead to 4-2 again from the penalty spot. Paul Kindon then grabbed his hat-trick from close range before Michael Dowson fired in from the edge of the area to give a Final score and Bragging rites to Washington Victoria with a Fine 6 - 2 win over our local rivals.Bowburn Cooperage were 4-0 winners at East Rainton Travellers Rest.Hetton Social were 5-0 away winners at Framwellgate Moor Salutation. Pelaw Grange Dogs were 6-2 Home winners Over Ferryhill Dynamoes. The Shadforth Plough Inn game against Hamsteels Inn was transferred to Shadforth due to the Hamsteels Pitch being unplayable. A good gritty performance from the Shadforth Plough side of you score 4 we will score 5, a Joe Simpson hat trick and a goal from both wingers Dan Hall and Stuart Coxon saw of the visiting Hamsteels Inn side. Neil Belford had a good run in his cameo role for the Plough who struggled to pull a team together. The Plough winning 5-4.
In the Fourth Division Leaders High Handenhold Bird Inn were 4-2 Home winners over Ferryhill White Horse, Witton Gilbert Wmc Moved in to Fourth Place with a Fine 3-0 Home win over New Durham Wmc. This was Wittons best team performance of the season to date, everyone to a man put in superb effort and they did it for 90 minutes. The game started at a frantic pace and was very even for the first 20 minutes or so although Witton carved out the better chances with Scott Embleton going close. Wittons keeper Bryan Potts was largely untroubled as our defence well marshalled by Wes Haley dealt with most things, but Potts came and dealt with crosses and long rang efforts. The breakthrough for Witton came on the half hour when Scott Embleton bravely converted at the far post to put Witton 1 up. That was extended 8 minutes later when Martin Macdonald arrived at the far post to knock in a great cross from the left to put Witton 2-0 up at half time. The second half was a real ding dong encounter, but Witton were disrupted a bit when Liam Summers was forced off in the first 5 minutes with a foot injury. His replacement David Callcutt did a great job though in a strange position for him. New Durham had a player sent off but never gave up and battled manfully for the remainder of the game but were finally put out of the game when Scott Embleton got his 2nd of the game with 14 minutes remaining to make it 3-0. to Witton. Neville’s Cross Social lost 3-0 at Quarrington Hill Wmc.Framwellgate Moor Wmc were 4-2 winners at Chester Leonard’s, Durham Garden House Crashed to a 9-1 defeat at Chester Easy Street.

Important League Announcement
Confirming Fixtures - Can we remind clubs that fixtures should be confirmed with the referee and opposition not later than five days before the match (confirmation means speaking to them/receiving acknowledgement). If referees or clubs do not receive confirmation in time, then please report the miscreant club to the appropriate referees/league match secretary, and we'll levy fines, or for repeated offenders consider withdrawing referees or fixtures.
No Jewellery - Clubs and referees are reminded that Law 4 of the Laws of the Game was amended in 2006-07 and states that "A player must not use equipment or wear anything which is dangerous to himself or another player (including any kind of jewellery)".
There is one exception:- "A player, who can satisfy the referee prior to the game that their plain wedding band is unable to be removed, will be allowed to cover it with tape. (This only applies to a plain wedding band and no other type of jewellery).
Players should be clear that these items are their responsibility - it is not the referee's responsibility to provide tape to cover a wedding ring! Players are expected to ensure their equipment is safe when they step on the field, and the referee is simply there to police this.
Looking After Your Visitors - Can we remind clubs of the club guidance notes. In particular the need to greet them, make sure they know of arrangements, providing the referee with match balls and offering his/her match-fee prior to kick off.
Over the coming weeks we'll be asking referees/clubs to make sure they report home clubs who aren't following the rules.
Clubs - Looking After Your Visitors
· Check the match balls, pitch, nets, goalposts and corner flags before the game, not just before kick off when it's too late to fix any problems..
· Ensure you meet the referee when he/she arrives. Offer him/her the match ball and his/her match fee before the game, and make sure he/she knows where to change, where the pitch is and any hospitality arrangements afterwards
· Ensure the opposition have arrived, know where to change and where the pitch is, and that there are no colour clashes (teams do turn up with different coloured kits than they’re supposed to).
· Ensure your team, the referee and the opposition are aware of arrangements for valuables (generally they’re safest on the pitch, with the goalkeeper).
· At half time, make sure you offer refreshments to the referee.
· After the game, make sure you remind the referee and the away team of the hospitality details, or accept their hospitality if you are the away team.

Tommy 'Premier Passions' Porter the League's Hero

Graham Lilley and Chris Wray.
| Tommy Porter
Groundsman of the Year
The new football season may be less than a month old, but six grassroots Groundsmen have already been rewarded for their hard work on the pitch... The FA Groundsman of theYear Awards are in their second year, and at an awards ceremony at Windsor Racecourse, the national winners collected their prizes from Tommy Walsh of BBC's 'Groundforce' fame, Gareth Roberts, Sponsorship Manager of FA Partner Carlsberg and Steve Parkin, FA National Game Director. FA Leagues Manager, Mike Appleby, said the awards came about as a way of recognising the hard work put in by groundsmen up and down the country. "Everyone was being rewarded for their work apart from the groundsmen and yet the pitch is the most important part of the process. "They often have to do the work single-handed and normally for no reward - much of their work is voluntary," he added. "With this in mind, these national winners have all done a wonderful job, more often than not on very limited budgets." A team of professional groundsmen and turf care professionals was drafted in to act as judges as the 155 nominations were whittled down to regional and then to the national champions. Appleby added: "Quality pitches are essential for the development of the game at every level - poor playing facilities can seriously hamper this development and continued participation." The Groundsman of the Year competition is part of a wide-ranging FA plan to improve facilities. Some 97% of all affiliated football is played outside the Football League and research by the Football Foundation found drainage problems and lack of changing rooms were the biggest bug bears. The FA is now addressing these concerns as part of a national facility development strategy, where local stakeholders are being encouraged to identify facilities most in need of 2003 National Winners: Nationwide Conference - Rod Pippard - Yeovil Town Ryman League & overall Level 2 winner - Peter Ash - Aylesbury United Dr Martens League - Peter Allen - Moor Green UniBond League - Alf Padena - Radcliffe Borough Level 3 & Below Leagues - Tommy Porter - Durham City FC Local Authority - States of Jersey Tommy Premier Passions Porter Former Sunderland Afc Grounds man Tommy Porter, the man who put true zest and spirit into Premier Passions, has been named by the FA as the country's top non-league groundsman. Tommy who Turned 70 in the summer, the former farm worker retired as Sunderland's head grounds man five years ago and Now plies his trade at Grass Roots Level with Albany Northern League club Durham City at the Archibald’s Stadium. Though Tommy is now hard of hearing’ ("all that machinery") and his elbows won't straighten ("all that bending") he has lost neither his enthusiasm nor his appetite for working and preparing Durham’s Football Field. On his day off, he looks after his greenhouse and his three gardens. Famously outspoken in the TV Premier Passions, the five-part fly-on-the-wall television documentary about Sunderland's last season at Roker Park, he was the only person for whom a bleep test seemed unnecessary. Manager Peter Reid, conversely, managed 15 f-words in one sentence. "It made Roy 'Chubby' Brown look like an advert for Blue Peter," observed the fanzine A Love Supreme at the time. "Every time Tommy Porter came on the screen we listened and nodded," ALS added. At City's handsome but altogether humbler stadium, Tommy swears he's never been happier in his life - but as well a good grounds man might, calls a spade a spade. Think back to the last time we were in the Premiership and, more specifically, to the Premier Passions documentary. Remember the enduring images of the fated TV programme? What were they for you? Peter Reid making Roy Chubby Brown look like an advert for Blue Peter? Bob Murray and John Fickling discussing the style of taps in the new stadium instead of Premiership survival? Sure, these things stay in the memory. Then there were the "fans." The producers enlisted the help of a posh schoolgirl, a lab technician, a decorator and someone who looked suspiciously like Paul Whitehouse - all professing to be life-long fans. Their interviews appeared contrived and lacking somewhat in passion. One man, however, unwittingly summed up the feelings of thousands, and in the wake of the series, the thoughts and attitudes of a humble grounds man remained imprinted on our hearts and minds. Every time Tommy Porter appeared on screen, we listened and nodded. I joined Tommy at his new place of work, the home of Sunderland Reserves and Durham FC, The Archibald Stadium "I've been supporting Sunderland since the day I was born. I was in the Roker End with my father, on his shoulders, shouting for the Lads when I was only a tiny youngster. Probably five or six, even, and I've always supported them. I was that thrilled with the fervour of everybody that it was forever etched in my memory. Charlie Hurley was my favourite player, without a doubt. I tried to copy him, because I played centre half when I was a youngster - my ambition was to be like him and of course it didn't happen! But I idolised Charlie Hurley, I thought he was superb. " One of the best matches I've ever saw was on the way to Wembley in 1973, when we beat Man City at Roker Park and Vic Halom scored. There was a chap next to me who said "I'll see you at Wembley' before the game. After the match, he was crying and he said "I told you, I'll see you at Wembley!' "Out of all the recent players, my favourite was Kevin Ball, just for his honesty, endeavour and working ability, not necessarily for his skill - though I thought he was a lot more skilful than people appreciated him for. Kevin Ball was a rock and he was Sunderland through and through. I was just sad to see him leave. He was fabulous to be around, absolutely tremendous. Him and I got on very, very well, but I think everyone got on with Kevin. As long as you did your bit, he would appreciate you for it, "cos he did his bit too." "The low point of working at Sunderland had to be the relegation from the Premiership, but I loved working at the training ground and seeing how the players were getting on and I also enjoyed being the head grounds man at Roker Park. It was fantastic, much better than my time at the Stadium of Light, because you had a free run, there wasn't anybody stopping you doing your job." Supporting Sunderland wasn't Tommy's only passion, gardening also played a large part in his life? When the opportunity to become Sunderland's grounds man arose in 1986, Tommy knew it was the perfect job for him. "Before I was a grounds man, I did all sorts of things, though I have been a gardener all my life. Now, I've been a grounds man for fifteen years, starting when Denis Smith was manager. They wanted somebody to look after the training ground, so I put my CV in and got the job straight away. When I started work at the Charlie Hurley Centre, the grass was two foot six high and there was one supposed pitch at the far side." The years that Tommy spent at the club were some of the most turbulent ever. In such an intense, ever-changing atmosphere, Porter is in an ideal position to compare the different managers he's worked for. "I thought Denis Smith was a good manager. If he'd got the money, he would have been great for Sunderland Football Club. Malcolm Crosby was absolutely brilliant. A great lad. I wasn't keen on Terry Butcher, although I think he did his best - he just wasn't with it. Mick Buxton was a gentleman through and through. I wouldn't put Peter Reid at the top - as a person or a manager. I got on with him until we moved to the new stadium, but after that it was a very difficult situation." A "difficult situation" which ended in Tommy's sad departure from the club he has always loved. Tommy pinpoints one man who was responsible for his exit. "The then Stadium Manager, Dave Nicholson - I thought he was a really naughty piece of work. He's not there now, which, in my opinion, is good for Sunderland Football Club. He always seemed to be doing his best to knock me back whenever he could - he didn't want me there from the start. I don't know why, perhaps it had something to do with Premier Passions. I expected to be head grounds man, but he made damn sure I wouldn't be. He made all the decisions, but when the bullets flew, he stepped back. "One Thursday night he came in and said: "You can go now, you're retiring, aren't you?' I couldn't even say goodbye to anyone, because it was after 5pm and they'd all gone home. And that was after fourteen years there. Nicholson was the worst person I've ever worked for in my life. I reckon that losing him was the best thing to happen to Sunderland since getting rid of McMenemy. I've got no bitterness towards the club, but I'll always have bitterness towards Nicholson." Even now years after his departure, Tommy finds it difficult to understand why he was treated so poorly. He believes the writing was on the wall long before his eventual retirement, with the events surrounding the now infamous home game against Stockport County in the 1998/99 season, when the pitch was iced over. It is a story that illustrates just how strained relations between Porter, Peter Reid and Dave Nicholson had become. "I didn't like the forecast before the match, so I said to the security man that if there was any snow, he must phone me up. I got a call at quarter to five, telling me that the snow was on the pitch. Little did anybody know, I had always been barred from the boiler room by Mr Nicholson. But the match was going to suffer, so I dashed into the boiler room, pushed what I thought were the right buttons, and everything started up. Then I went outside to clear the snow from the field. There was nobody else there but me. When I went back to the boiler room, everything was working but there was no flame in the boiler. I phoned Nicholson on his mobile - he was in a hotel somewhere with his wife. I told him he'd better sort something out quick, because the boiler still wasn't firing, and I couldn't get it on because I hadn't been taught. A plumber and an electrician came and they couldn't get it started either. "The match eventually started with snow on the pitch, and we scraped a 1-0 win. Reidy called me in after the match and said that if we'd lost the match he would've sacked me. Nicholson just stood back the whole time and never opened his mouth. That was the final straw, and I just had to get out of there." It is an accurate measure of Tommy Porter's character that, despite the tension of his last two years at Sunderland, he still retains a deep affection for all things red and white - particularly the fans. "I've always had a marvellous rapport with the supporters, I couldn't go anywhere without being stopped. It's a little embarrassing sometimes but then once you get talking to them you realise that these supporters are the best in the world. Because I've supported them as I child, I know the passion of the fans. I still try to go to games when I can. Tommy's now concentrates on keeping the pitch at New Ferens Park in tip-top condition. Even at a quick glance, it's obvious that he has lost none of his legendary enthusiasm or skill. The pitch is immaculate, a Bowling Green, even after the 70 plus games it was subjected to last season; a testament to Tommy's hard work. It comes as no surprise that, when I suggest retirement, Tommy lets out a laugh before launching into another breathless sentence. "I've been at Durham City for two years and I'm still working six days a week. I honestly think that this club can get into the conference. We've definitely got the pitch! We'll see how the joints last but I'd like to be involved all the time here now." In an Interview with |
